OST is great. Kanako was quite adorable. The “gaijin” Takafumi parts were among the funniest parts… I’ve yet to get all the scenes and CGs but DAT END! ;_;

Auu… I couldn’t figure out how to get one of the CGs. I kept trying, selected everything that I could… but I couldn’t get it ;~;

It was one of Takafumi resting on a tree and it looks like a really interesting scene! Couldn’t figure out how to get to it…

It’s been a little over a year since I last picked this up and gave ti a read, so it’s coming back around on my rotation.

Loads of fun themes explored in this VN. Fun times, sad times, and Takafumi being friggin hilarious throughout. I especially liked the fact that in order to get the “true” end, you basically had to ignore Tomoyo throwing herself at you in order to manipulate you. Although some people might prefer that ending, I like the true ending well enough, and the ported version added a small bit to the end to make it a slightly more happy-ended

For anyone who hasn’t read it yet, I recommend it. Was a fun, albeit somewhat short, read. If you liked Clannad and wanted more of Tomoyo, it throws more of her your way, as well as some sides of her that you didn’t get to see in the original story.

7/10 “it’s okay I guess”

So I’ve always shat on Tomoyo After without knowing much about it, mostly to fool around, but somewhat because I couldn’t see myself liking it, since it’s porn and a character I actively dislike being central.
It hated me in turn, with every…acquisition of it I made, it constantly refused to BGM or play the opening, my enthusiasm to play the VN due to all this was at laughably low levels.

Then one day it worked.
okay sure why not.

Pleasantly surprised. The writing was fairly decent and Takafumi in general being a very high point in just about every way, great dude and his arc was the best part.
Tomo was…a bit plot devicey, but oh well, nothing wrong with her.
No see the problem is Tomoya, who the hell is this? This isn’t the Tomoya I know, why does he care so much about family, this one shouldn’t have had that development, this one should think the exact opposite, bugged the hell out of me. It’d be fine if it wasn’t Tomoya, but they insist it is.

Also this thing

.

''BUY ME SOME ICE CREAM"

GOD SHUT UP ABOUT THE GOD DAMN ICE CREAM.
Yeah it get it it’s moe or some shit to give your girl a favorite food but every god damn scene I swear.
Calm the fuck down on the Ice Cream, it’s so annoying.

I did warm up too Kanako though, her introduction was unbelievably bitchy, but she won points back later with charm.
However I picked that picture for a reason, because I agree with the quote featured. She really feels insignificant to the plot compared to the other four.

Oh, and I don’t give a shit a about Tomoyo but I established that, all this did was give me a bit more of a dislike of her. At least they depicted her as the ‘bad guy’ for a bit rather than trying to shove ‘oh man she’s so perfect’ down my throat the entire game.

Oh right and the porn is shameless and pathetic.

Now then.

The After After.
''Oh crap we forgot to shit on our characters enough, that’s what sells right"
''Oh it’s fine I’ll just take a big steaming dump"
Nope.
Why did we need this? What was wrong with ending it in the scene before this? What does this bring to the experience, other than giving it a downer ass ending. Why did we need a downer ass ending? Why did you put FUCKING PORN right in it?
The After After is a flawed, unnecessary, addition that serves no good purpose. The VN would be better off without it.

tl;dr: I won’t seriously shit on Tomoyo After, but I won’t sing it’s praises.

You have my respect for actually giving it a good chance.

I really liked Tomoyo After. Tomoyo was already my favorite heroine from Clannad so I was psyched to see what her own “After Story” would be like.

It did not disappoint. I’d say it got progressively better and more interesting as it went. Takafumi and Kanako were both characters I rather enjoyed, and Tomoya and Tomoyo were just as great as in Clannad. The first arc was fine albeit a little unmemorable, the second arc was better, the third arc was really good and the final arc was… well, I loved it. For the third arc, to me it highlighted why Kanako WASN’T a useless character, and actually I think she does a better job spreading happiness than Komari does. The third arc also has nice character development for Tomoyo. And then you get to Tomoyo After After…

(Spoilers for the After arc)
One thing I liked about this visual novel was that if you got a “bad end”, what it amounted to was an ending where life just went on, but issues remained unresolved, so in that regard it was unsatisfying. But then, comparing it to the “true end”, on some levels they are far preferable, aren’t they?

Tomoyo After After, to me, was beautiful. A wonderful revisiting of all stages of Tomoya and Tomoyo’s relationship, and thoroughly reminding me why this was (and still is) my favorite Key pairing. And then it turns out this has been repeating… and finally Tomoyo managed to get an “I love you” out of Tomoya. Usually I would have found this extremely cheesy, but Key can nail even that so well. The fact that in just about a week’s time, Tomoya can rediscover his love for Tomoyo really speaks volumes about how they connect. And then when amnesia strikes again, but this time with the ring Tomoya immediatly believes that they were in love, that, I thought, was very touching. It goes on to feature an H scene, but this was the ONE H scene in Key that I felt was actually not bad. Not in the porn, I mean, I could hardly care less for that, but in storytelling. It’s not out of place, it’s not blown out of proportion, it’s just there and it feels natural that it’s there.

And that final monologue, is possibly one of the most memorable monologues in all of Key’s works. When realization struck me as to what happened thereafter, it was painful, sure, but seeing how Tomoyo pushed on was inspiring. I really dislike that they changed this ending in the rereleases because to me, it was the most beautiful part of the visual novel, and while it’s tragic, I would not have it changed. Maybe that’s what Tomoyo After After managed to convey to me better than even Clannad or Little Busters; that you can accept tragedy and move on.
So yeah, Tomoyo After. Great visual novel. And Tomoyo After After stands among After Story and Refrain for me as one of the best plotlines in Key.

In the bad end, no one was happy. It was a horrible ending.
In the true end, everyone was happy, despite everything that had happened. It didn’t feel sad, it felt like there was a world of hope left for the characters to discover. You can also link the ending to Clannad and say that by helping people find the treasure in their life, Tomoyo is collecting orbs of light~

That’s my favorite scene from anything Key have done. The music worked really well, and (even after being translated into english) it was written really well. The presentation was great, and it was even foreshadowed multiple times throughout the VN. Then, of course, Life is Like a Melody plays - a song that fits perfectly with everything that Tomoyo After stood for, and links back to Clannad at the end of the song.

So this happened.

Uuuuuh, what? Where?

Throughout the whole VN. In fact, it’s the focus for most of the VN up until the final arc, which switches focus to Tomoyo.

He did what like, beat up some dudes one by one who Tomoyo solos all at once in a bad end?
And restore a place(with Kanako doing the heavy lifting on getting friendly with the locals) while Tomoyo sat around moping because she didn’t agree with what ‘Tomoya’ was doing, and RIGHTLY SO frankly. Although we can’t forget the one time she did help out she did the work of ten people while in a heavy hot bear suit, because Tomoyo is amazing.

Yep Tomoya is the real mary sue here, Tomoyo is just your average superhuman normal girl.

Mental strength doesn’t count as a “Mary Sue” trait? Tomoya is a injured guy with little fighting experience, who managed to take on a gang of fighters. He has little experience with architecture, but he builds a school. What does Tomoyo do? She beats up some guys (something she spent a large majority of her life training for and doing) and carried stuff… which comes with the previous point. She lacks the ability to make smart judgments, struggles to understand others without trying hard to, and is quick to falter emotionally, whereas Tomoya is able to keep moving forward.

They have different strengths and weaknesses :stuck_out_tongue: Tomoya can be strong when he’s passionate, but struggles to be passionate. Tomoyo is strong physically and is good at fighting opposition verbally, but struggles emotionally and logically.

“Tomoyo has weak mental strength”

Bullshit, she spend, what was it, 5 years repeating the same week over and over with a 14 year old, you want to tell me that woman has weak mental strength when she can do that?

Bollocks.

I seem to recall Tomoya being not half bad in a fight, and he’s fit and healthy.
Wait shit, Clannad Tomoya isn’t this Tomoya, I forget.

Nice call on the architecture thing, but am I arguing Tomoya isn’t sueish? No, I’m arguing that he’s not more of a sue that Tomoyo, which, frankly is an almost impossible task to begin with so I’m not sure how you could possibly suggest it.

I’d argue that first point by saying that’s right at the end, after seeing everything Tomoya did. Tomoya isn’t fit and healthy either. Pre-Clannad maybe, but not anymore.

He is constantly lifting shit. so can I go for ‘not out of shape’ instead?

Tomoyo was my favorite Clannad character (nudging ahead of Yukine) so finding out there was a sequel to Tomoyo’s route blew my mind~ The translation took forever, and eventually fell into the hands of a different translation group, but it was finally fully translated!
There is only one good end, so it’s pretty linear, but a looot happens! I’m kinda surprised it hasn’t been made into an anime yet. It’d be perfect for an anime!
Lots of Clannad elements made their way into Tomoyo After. Great comedy, pretty CGs, family feels, and an amazing soundtrack that uses the same instruments as Clannad’s soundtrack used~ The ending theme is reeeaaally nostalgic!
The long ending scene has to be my favorite ending of any VN. My heart ;~; If you haven’t read it, you are missing out. My second favorite Visual Novel of all time~

Dungeons and Takafumis is fun too~ So many different Takafumis A

If anyone knows, how exactly did the ending transform over the rereleases? I’ve only read the first print. Did every version after that just have a different ending, or do you have to unlock the new ending in a certain way or something?

From what I know. There was the original release, and the memorial release. The original release only has 1 ending, while the memorial release has 2 endings, 1 being the good ending and 1 being the bad ending. You have to unlock the endings separately, having only 1 choice that leads you to the destiny. I heard people say that Tomo affects the ending. (I don’t know if I was suppose to spoiler tag that since it says the only spoiler tag CLANNAD spoilers).

In the original, the true ending is a slightly vague bittersweet ending. In the memorial edition, more was added to… uh… Key-fy the ending. It’s still vague and dream-like, and I personally feel like it was an unnecessary change, but oh well.
The perfect edition adds the memorial edition content to the original, and adds some small scenes and a bunch of CGs.
That’s pretty much it. No difference in play patterns iirc.

The original had 6 bad endings, and a bunch of “oh, you made the wrong choice. Here’s a title screen!” endings.

So basically the new ending just outright replaces the old ending. Well damn, that’s what I hoped it wouldn’t be.
