What on earth is osu!?

osu! is a rhythm game based on the gameplay of a variety of popular commercial rhythm games such as Ouendan or Elite Beat Agent.

The primary gamemode basically consists of clicking/tapping circles to the beat of a song.
There are also three other modes:
Taiko, a clone of the popular Japanese rhythm game of the same name.
Mania, a clone of more typical rhythm games like Beatmania.
Catch the Beat, a mode where you move and dash using the keyboard to catch fruit.

The game has competitive ranking systems for all of the gamemodes, which makes it more compelling to continue playing as you have feedback for improvement.

You can play singleplayer and multiplayer, and we have actually had multiple community events here playing multiplayer! (Although we mostly spontaneously play now.)

All the song maps that you can play in the game are community created using the editor in the game, and are free. This means you can create things like in the screenshot above.
The majority of songs that have been created on osu! are anime-related songs or Japanese in general (which some people may dislike), although there is a decent amount of other music too, stuff like drum and bass is fun to play.

You can customise how the game looks by downloading and using skins, which can change most of what the game looks and sounds like! They are very easy to make if you have basic image editing skills, you can make the game look and sound just the way you want it.

You can find the download on the homepage, and the game is completely free!

Unless you wish to support the creator, which gets you some nice perks that aren’t game changing:
You gain access to osu!direct which is a more streamlined way of acquiring song maps.
You can filter by friend rankings and selected mods in the leaderboards.
And you can change a couple things in your skin that you previously could not.

You can play all the gamemodes with just a keyboard and mouse:

Standard osu! can be played with just the mouse, using left and right click to the beat.
You can also use the keyboard instead of clicking, putting less hardship on your mouse hand.
Most people who play at a higher level play using a graphics tablet, either dragging the pen along the tablet, or hovering it in the air and moving your hand around. You can also play purely with the pen for clicking, although that is not usually recommended.
Taiko is played using 4 keys on the keyboard. Although you could probably connect some taiko drums to the computer and use those!
Mania is played using keys on the keyboard, although I’m sure some people like to use custom controllers for that.
Catch the Beat is played using two keys for direction, and another key for dashing.

I stopped playing Osu after my rate of progression slowed down too much. It’s really difficult at first, but you get better quickly. I like that the difficulty curve is smooth, even if a bit steep; i.e. there isn’t “Easy -> Medium -> Hard”, there are just harder songs/maps. At the same time though, I found it difficult to easily find songs that matched my skill level, since it’s all community-made and you have to find your own songs. I haven’t played for a while though and should try it again at some point.

I stopped playing after I changed my mouse and the scroll wheel is not an actual scroll wheel so the sensitivity is super high and always messes with my volume. I could get back into it if I play with other people I guess…

There is an option to disable the mouse wheel in play, and you could just disable it or something if it bothers you that much. I’m pretty sure there are things to lower your mouse wheel sensitivity too.

I haven’t played since pretty much August and I’m pretty bad at every game mode but I’m least bad at Taiko so if by some chance there’s somebody who actually plays it and is a decent rank it’d be fun to play together.

Mainly Taiko but I can also play Standard. I’m a sweaty tryhard who only plays with mods so I can blame my poor performance on them.

I started playing the game somewhat recently, but I got bored pretty quickly.
Playing the same songs over and over became redundant until I found about all the music packs you could find online.
After learning about the additional content, I started playing now and then. I always get the highest score of my region according to them, which is really sad because, first, my scores are pretty bad, and second, I am the only person labeled in my region.

i haven’t had the opportunity to try the multiplayer mode, but I would be willing to play if anyone is interested.

Osu! is really fun.

Custom skins can also make it fun. I’m currently using this skin: KanoMix.

Beatmapping is challenging. One of these days I’ll have something to show there. I’ve been wanting to put together a map for Cryin’ Girl, but I haven’t been happy with any of the attempts I’ve made so far.

I really want to play with others, but my download speeds are terrible. So, getting new maps ends up being a hassle, and causes trouble for others during matches. :/

Mania mostly. Standard second-mostly. I’m not very good at Taiko, but every once in awhile I try to get better at it as well. Sometimes I get bored and try Catch the Beat too.

All of FELT’s music and maps are good.

Asymmetry and Hibikase are also fun.

If you’ve played multiplayer with me when I hosted, you’re probably sick of all those maps, and the various other maps.

None really. My current goal with mania is to get ranked within the top 1,000 of my region though.

I also somehow manage to hurt my hand every time I play standard now. That’s probably an achievement, right?

I used to play about 4 years ago it looks like, I play time to time, but not even close to what I used to. I don’t think my skill have staled very much because my history says one of my few recent plays was one of my best lol.I think I might even be better just cause I got a more than $5 mouse lol. I can pass most hard levels and very very few insane…

I’m probably not as pro as the other guys on the forum. And I rarely play multiplayer. But if you’re up for it, just message me and we can chill to some Key songs. I normally play normal mode and muzukashii taiko but not mania.

Ohoho! osu! I have been playing with bonecuss a lot, but I stopped for now and I am currently playing osu!mania 4k. If anyone wants to play then yeah lets go ;D, either osu! (I may suck sry) or osu!mania 4k.
Oh the times when I was challenging bonecuss and improving my acc just to show him I am made of fucking diamond and suprass him. The grind was real. Miss those times. (Never beat his acc cuz I suck, but I was his senpai once in terms of skill)

Just joined a group with @LinkThinks, @IkaCZ and @Bonecuss… Wrong people to play with, I can’t move my mouse that fast or precisely. Going back into Osu hibernation after one song Like to see one of you weebs beat me at Guitar Hero though pffff best rhythm game
