Charlotte - Episode 1 "I Think About Others"

So there’s this blog that I have a love-hate relationship with; I often disagree with his opinions, but he just provides such good insight that I keep coming back to read it. I thought I’d go ahead and share it with you guys, as he made his impressions of the first episode of Charlotte: http://www.lostinanime.com/2015/07/first-impressions-charlotte.html

so much ayumi hate everywhere ;_;

It’s not like it’s unjustified ayyyyyyyyyyy

I believe someone touched upon this before, but:

I wonder. Did Yuu receive his power because he has been asking himself “Why am I myself, and not somebody else” ?
Or did he start asking himself that because his power enabled him to become someone else for a brief period of time?

First of all, I love the protagonist. I much prefer him over any other bland no-personality protagonist that we seem to see alot of these days. I’m really excited to see him develop and change into a better person over the course of the story.

To my surprise, I really enjoyed the Takamatsu clone. I found him pretty funny and enjoyable, so I can’t wait to see more of him. I didn’t expect Nao to act the way she did, but I overall liked her as well. Again, I can’t wait to see more of her. Finally, generic little sister is generic.

The music is great. Once the soundtrack comes out, I’ll have my hands all over it. The only thing I found disappointing was the lack of an opening or ending theme for this episode, but I suppose a week of wait isn’t too bad.

Animation was great and very fluid. I found the character designs kind of dull, but I’m sure I’ll probably grow used to him as time goes on.

Pacing was overall ok. It was a little too fast for my tastes, but I feel like this stands out more to me only because its the first episode and it will take time for me to get used to it. At least it’s slower than Angel Beats’ breakneck fast pacing.

Overall, I really liked it. The hype is very much real. This episode did its job and made me fairly excited for the next one. There is alot left to uncover in Charlotte’s world and alot of potential to explore so I’ll be happily waiting to see how this all plays out.

I dont think it was either. He said he had always thought about that concept since he was was little, so long before he got his power. But there are no implications (yet) that he or anyone else’s specific power came about because of their own thoughts or personality.

So you’re saying it’s all just a total coincidence?

“Since he was little” is a bit vague, so I think there’s a non-zero probability of his power influencing his way of thinking.
Well, personally, I think it’s the other way around. That the powers you’re granted are related to your personality/thoughts. The term “personal reality” (Index) comes to mind.

Just saying, it was no coincidence that (Little Busters spoiler) Naoe Riki suffered from Narcolepsy, either.

No, I’m just stating the facts.
On the contrary, I thinks its possible that it works both ways. We can almost be certain that the powers have to do with genetics, due to the image from the third PV. Thus, his way of thinking and personality, which is at least partly a result of his genetics, would be directly connected to his power in that way.

I’m guessing he grew up projecting himself onto others, and one day, he literally did it.

I don’t think he got his power because of it neither did he start asking that because he got the powers.

I assume a lot of people ask themselves this question (including me), but they don’t get powers because of it neither do they start asking this just after receiving powers, since it’s very easy to do it.

It was implied in the anime he asked the question before he got the powers, however, it was also said that teenagers have a probability of developing powers, that will disappear though. If the first affirmation was true, it would be pretty easy to get their powers back, just thinking about it. And a lot of people would have the same power.

In my opinion, asking this question is what triggers the power, like the spell before the magic. Every time he wants to possess someone else, he has to ask himself this question. Probably he constantly asked this during his whole life, but in one moment that happened, and he realized he had powers.

@Naoki_Saten There’s a lot to discuss about that because, well, not even Yuu knows how he got his powers. His first instance of receiving his powers, he states, is when he “thought of somebody else”

To answer your question, however, then he started asking “why am I myself” before he got his powers. I think that was made apparent enough.

As for how he got his powers from there, well… That’s a big rabbit hole. For all we know, he could have received his powers when he stared at that meteor thing~

Oh I thought you guys were talking about an anime I remember watching that show! I really liked heroes wasn’t the logo an eclipse or something.

On another note why didn’t he just posses nao while she beat him up does he have to see the person to change bodies or was he not that smart lolz

He says that it only works on people he has eyesight of.

Even if he could manage to beat the pseudo-invisibility, there were two of them, his body would have just chilled there, and 5 seconds later she’d have REALLY kicked his ass.

Something I just thought of (sorry if it’s been brought up I didn’t read everything just skimmed), is his power like Geass where once he uses it on someone it can never be used on them again? If that’s the case are there really enough smart people for him to cheat as it showed him using like 5 or 6 for one test. If it’s not then how long does he have to go until he can use it on them again? I’m pretty sure this hasn’t been answered but I kind of hope it does eventually.

I was actually thinking about that even before it aired, due to the fact that Yuu is so similar to Kanie Seiya from Amagi Brilliant Park, who shares his voice actor, his arrogance, his swag, and also has a power which he can only use once on someone.

They didn’t specifically say anything about it. And Yuu didnt seem to be worried about it. To answer the part about the tests, even smart people get questions wrong, so he would probably want to check all the answers with several different people.

Never specified, buuuuut no, probably not. His 5-second limit is already a weakness within itself, so making it even more flawed would be useless haha.

But yeah, the only thing that proves it is that it’s unlikely that he could cheat from different people all the time. After a few tests, he’d have been finished with all his classmates, leaving him dry.

Loved the first-half of the episode. It was refreshing to see an arrogant, selfish protagonist this time than KEY’s usual passive heroes.

The episode started stumbling when

  1. His sister started talking
  2. The main character was reduced to an idiot. I’d like to see more of him besting everyone and being too smart for his own good but it seems like from here onward, he’d be both the butt of jokes and the sensible guy who’ll be pointing out other characters’s stupidity. I appreciated the episode at first because the hero had something to do than be the ‘lead guy swarmed by girls’ but this is KEY so, oh well.

Overall, it was a good episode. It’s already throwing hints and stuff all over the place, which I think what made the episode seem a bit scattered but something to ponder about at the end.

Except he never was from the beginning. He just stole everyone answers and pretended to be smart. Hell, he wasnt even smart enough to know not to get 100% right on everything so people wouldnt suspect him :stuck_out_tongue:

This might make me sound like a white knight or whatever but I don’t want to see more of that. He’s an asshole, and he should get his just desserts for all the crazy shit he’s putting other people through.

But that’s what made the episode entertaining to me. He was funny until mid-way through.
