New Angel Beats! Project Announced: Details Coming December 22

The recent countdown on the http://www.angelbeats.jp/ website has ended with an announcement of an announcement! ...yeah, this shouldn't be a surprise to anyone who's familiar with Japanese media. An event will be held to formally announce details of the project on the 22nd of December, through a live event accessible to those who apply on the webpage and are selected, and also via a livestream on Nico Nico Douga.

What we know is it's almost certainly an anime of some kind: it's described as a joint project between Key and Aniplex. The webpage shows art of a silhouette of an unidentified character, overlayed with the words "THE NEW PROJECT". This may be one of the new characters Na-Ga has developed for the Angel Beats! visual novel. The webpage makes mention of both the 5th anniversary of Angel Beats! and the 15th anniversary of Key, so it's clear trying to generate hype for the announcement!

It may not be news of the visual novel like some people were hoping, but don't worry, because more news of that is coming soon!

So, what do you think this might be? A movie? A series? A heaven's door adaptation? A sequel? Speculation Start!

It’s gonna be merchandise of new character designs. CALLING IT!

Good news! It surprises me.

But I think the new project is something apart of Angel Beats! project.

Wait so the countdown was all just to hype up an announcement which hypes up a livestream which only people who apply and selected can watch it? O__O

You can also watch it on niconico live! Not sure if it’s gonna be country-restricted tho >_<

I hope its a movie, or just an anime sequel. Some poeple say angel beats doenst need a sequel, but tbh if there will be a sequel ill be like… the biggest hype ever in my life, i will even eat my cats food lulz.

A movie I could understand. It’s something short to build hype for the VN. A sequel I can’t understand, because there wasn’t really anything to continue on from after AB ended without losing what made AB interesting.

A prequel or a remake could be possible too, but I don’t think they’d do a remake now of all times; that’s what the VN is for.

A note: Simply because it’s not VN related doesn’t really mean anything to the world of AB! when you look at Heaven’s Door or Track Zero or some elements of the anime. Every aspect is integral to what makes ‘Angel Beats!’ because it’s a multimedia project in and of itself. Example: You’re severely missing out by not reading Heaven’s Door. So, needless to say, I’m very excited.

Also HELL YES to new music. That snippet got me so excited.

I think what we have here is the workings of something that’s intended to change of the view of Angel Beats! as it was shown to anime viewers. Whether it be a miniseries, a short movie- Anything- What ends up being seen is going to obviously be quite important to the series. A new character being shown alongside characters like Kanade and Otonashi…? That’s important.

Or, it could just be a new NaGa character and they want to detail what side characters do in AB!, because they’re part of Otonashi’s ‘leveling’ iirc. The excitement is /endless/.

Judging from how the Mekakucity anime was received, a large amount of people will refuse to believe that, and will just think that they are all the same thing and that only one part of it is worth experiencing. >>

That’s my style of music. It was a mess. I think I’ll like this new OST more than the anime’s.

I’m wondering this too. It’s almost as if ‘New Project’ and Angel Beats! are two separate things, but… Why market them together…? Very strange…

wait so there’s a completely new project besides the angel beats project?

I’m under this impression, however it’s still extremely awkward that they used the angelbeats.jp site- But it WAS an announcement about an event that will contain AB info… But who knows. At any rate, saying it’s an Angel Beats! project may be overshooting- It might not be AB! related. We’ll simply have to see.

I think it’s pretty clear that it is AB related. It is being advertised amongst, alongside, and within AB related material, and ‘project’ is a very Angel Beats-ish word to use considering one of the motifs of the AB universe.

The silhouette even shows up in the AB color scheme, with the AB circle thing, surrounded in text (that follows the AB house theme) talking about Angel Beats

If it is a separate project, that video is trashy advertising.

It most certainly is

Like I said, I don’t really care what form it comes in, because hype is hype.
BUT it is most indeed interesting that it is marketed as New Project and Angel Beats!. Separate, but related somehow. Of course, they’re probably marketing it so vaguely on purpose just to build up hype (its working).

Wait what new music? The one in the 15 second preview? Because I cross-referenced it to the original Ichiban no Takaramono and they sound the same to me…

Anyways, @Bizkitdoh, I notice the character in the silhouette is wearing boots. Any idea about that?

Lastly, am I the only one with the nagging feeling that silhouette girl is just a Kanade re-design?

I was thinking that maybe a sequel could be possible by having Otonashi helping other people and making another story around that.

And to me, the silhouette looks like a younger Kanade.

So after sleeping on it, I have a new theory. They’re really stressing how involved Key is with this project. What if this is why the VN has been delayed? to restructure the new material into a multimedia format?

My theory is that this is either an anime adaptation of the VN, or at least something to compliment it.

The piano at the end is not Ichiban lmao

That does seem like the most likely, yeah. after the anime, Track Zero and Heaven’s Door, they haven’t done anything to renew the franchise until this year.

So in terms of new multimedia they have:

  • Mobile Game (ABOW)
  • New Manga (AB! 4-koma)
  • VN (whenever it does come)
  • Anime (this thing)

Well my joking theory about it being just new merchandise is unlikely since Aniplex is involved lol

I really don’t think it does. The other girl looks taller with a shorter skirt and curly hair. It’d be like a complete re-design with a lot less innocent/pure angle.
