Kanon - Yuuichi Aizawa Character Discussion

Discussion topic for Yuuichi Aizawa’s character in Kanon. Use the
tag at your own discretion.

Yuuichi is one of the main reasons Kanon is so entertaining for me. His snarky attitude is the source of much of the novel’s humor, and he is quite the likeable character. Although his personality changes depending on the route, throughout the majority of them he is quite kind and noble, despite his tendency to tease and joke around. He’s pretty much become the template for every Key main character afterwards (at least, as far as I know).

What do you guys think of the ‘original’ deadpan snarker?

Yuuichi is actually the dullest Key main heroine in my opinion :
I don’t dislike him or anything I just don’t really have any reason to care for him

And that CG of him in Nayuki’s epilogue where he has no face scares the crap out of me
Faceless protagonists are quite common in these types of games. I’ve seen at least two visual novels where this is done. It’s not creepy to me.

Although I do agree that Yuuichi does look better with an actual face. XD

I know it’s common but that doens’t make it any less frightening XD

I love this dickhead.

I say it all the time, Kanon shaped me, I aspired to be like this guy, going from meek quiet and overall loser to a douchebag who spends his every waking moment taking the piss, and I love it.
He’s my fucking hero.

Aside from his personal impact on me.
Even back when he was a faceless, technically nameless character, his personality still shone through, letting him be a character, not just a self insert. Far be me from some VN expert, but I’m to believe such a protagonist was something of a rarity back then.
Not to say he is without his flaws mind you, or rather, that’s the problem. He’s a tad ‘perfect’, having no issues of his own(aside from one instance 7 years ago) yet going around solving all the girls problems. I can understand how people would find him dull due to this, although I personally think it’s fine, because as reletively flawless as he may be, he’s also not particularity outstanding at anything, it evens out and lets his personalty do all the carrying, a task it does more than well enough.

What is he not a QT as the other girls for you?

I don’t get it?
What does QT mean?

“cutie”? i think
like that time you made that joke you told me in the car when we were driving home from matsuri and we passed the QT

Anyway as for my opinion of Yuuichi I think he’s fine and can be entertaining but I don’t care for him as much as other Key characters. More of a neutral stance

For Kanon 2006, he will always be Kyon transplanted into the Kanon world because of Sugita, and because Kanon 2006 came right after Haruhi.

This comparison annoys me to no end with how dirt common it is.
Oh man they share a voice actor, studio, and a snarky streak(WHICH come in different forms, Kyon keeping it to himself, while Yuuichi prefers to vocalize it to bully the girls).
It ain’t strong enough to justify how common it’s made.

I think Yuuichi is the most “netral” main chara towards Kanon heroines in Key…

He’s care and try his best to interact with all of heroines…For example he try his best to make Mai speak more, how he act toward Makoto before she die (read her some manga, playing with bell) and with other girl too…

But something really bugging me until now is…I don’t get the reason why he can fell for Ayu…is it because of Ayu is his osanajimi? That reason cannot help me at all

I accept CLANNAD canon TomoyaxNagisa…but for Yuuichi…something really missing and I don’t know what it is…

I totally agree with you!
I feel no chemistry between them at all!
The romance is just kinda…there (although that might be because Ayu is one of my least favorite Key heroines)

But the chemistry between Yuuichi and Shiori is amazing and they are my OTP in the Kanon-verse

What do you mean there is no chemistry, he’s a bully and she’s an easy target.
It’s flawless.

Idk I just feel nothing there between them :\

If me…I want Yuiichi ended with Miyuki,Mai, or Makoto…

The reason is :

For Miyuki : Because she’s trying her best the most…Although her heart still hurt because of past she trying to face Yuiichi with smile…For Mai : I think Mai will become cheerful like her past if Yuiichi beside her
And the last for Makoto : What will happen if Yuiichi saying “I love Makoto” before she died…Can we expect some Key Magic like usual and Makoto comeback alive??

If it comes to his look, I prefer this Yuuichi

than the one in the anime.

(Just boy’s things) my friend said his anime version looks like a cheap hentai male protagonist

Well I have to agree with @Kanon that The Uguu girl and this lad do have chemistry.

Though for me, the main reason was not because of their one-sided banter. I always think that Yuuichi is a tease; not only towards Ayu. So this bullying may be not that special.

Ayuayu is his childhood friend, and he liked her. That’s it.

… that was a pretty half-assed explanation, wasn’t it. truth is, my memory about kanon is a bit foggy

Yeah, Kanon isn’t really a romantic story.

Honestly, if I had to say Yuuichi having chemistry with someone, it’d be with Shiori. But that’s only if I had to say it :stuck_out_tongue:

As for Yuuichi himself, I don’t really have much to say. He was pretty much the trademark for the classic Key MCs all the way until CLANNAD, planetarian even. Not to say that the other MCs are patterned after him, just that he set a certain kind of expectation that was just totally destroyed with Little Busters.

I wasn’t really sure if I should post this here or in common for the bookclub - I put it here since it isn’t really about common per say - just about how Yuuichi has seemed to me in common so far.

I feel like I have seen a lot of people on discord and what not offhandedly mention that Yuuichi is jerk, but I don’t really think Yuuichi is that bad - at least not from what I have seen/chosen in common so far. He is a smartass, but there isn’t much bite in most of his commentary or actions.

The one exception is I played a scene this morning where if you choose to not eat Taiyaki with Ayu before school he shoves her bag of taiyaki into the snow “so that she wont feel pressured to eat them while they fresh” - in that scene he stopped just being a smartass and was a true jackass.

I know (from the anime) that as a kid he did some stupid things with the girls in the past, but it all seemed in line with kids being stupid kids. I don’t know - I will comeback and revisit this if I revise my opinion after I read more.

Well, I think there were many other scenes where Yuuichi was a jackass and if I remember correctly, they mostly involved Ayu…It’s been a while since I’ve played it but I’m sure there were more scenes where he acted like a total jerk but I totally agree with you that he’s not a bad protagonist. My opinion of him is kind of neutral, just like yours I guess.

I think, more than a jackass/smartass, he seems to be kind of like an iron fortress; a cynical kind of guy who isn’t too quick to trust people. Ayu keeps offering him taiyaki, but why should he get taiyaki from a girl who obviously stole them? And when they do realize they know each other, he always avoids her hug greetings, no matter how sweet they actually are. Then with Makoto, who he never really trusts until, well… you know :stuck_out_tongue:

It’s kind of sad, sure, but in a way, I think a lot more people in the real world are like that. Heck, I’d definitely say that if I were in his shoes, I wouldn’t trust Makoto as much as Nayuki and Akiko trust her, and I’d also feel awkward if a girl I barely remember started hugging me… Perhaps that has to do with his past, or with his reltionship with his family (who he doesn’t seem all that close with), but we never really get much background on that, do we?
