Jokrono and MagusVerborum try to understand Umineko No Naku Koro Ni

Once upon a time, a Seasoned Veteran and a Sherlock-in-Training tried to make sense of Umineko No Naku Koro Ni, and they still haven’t quite gotten there.

Midway through last year, @MagusVerborum and I set out to read Umineko, have fun with it and try unravel the puzzles, and we made a playthrough out of it to keep me from getting bored. About a month ago we finished recording Episode 8 and the videos are still churning out online.

With the recent closing of our beloved sibling site, Rokkenjima, we wanted to jump over here and spread the Umineko love. We use the Steam release, the old sprites, silly voices and constant tangents to ensure that you achieve maximum entertainment! :deino:

Check out the playlist here;

We also appeared on several of the Rokkenjima bookclubs for Umineko, so check those out too

For spoilers in this topic; please use spoiler tags for anything ahead of the playthrough, or if you jump in the YouTube comments, use ROT13.

I’d usually be a bit stricter on blatant self promotion without any permission. But whatever, I’ll give you my permission now. Please do ask staff in future if you want to make a thread promoting your non-key project.

I wondered if the topic would be transferred to Kazamatsuri, I’m glad it was.

This is really funny! I think I mentioned to you a friend and I did a read over with our voices a few years ago with the PS3 game and had the translation on a laptop. It was so much fun doing like what is 30 voices each or something like that?

I’m actually curious about that! Do you have like a recording or a patch or something like that?

Here’s our latest video~

We’re well stuck into the story and the theory-crafting by this point so I highly recommend watching the playthrough from the beginning if you’re new to Umineko! We’re coming up on the halfway point of the story and Jokrono is maybe, perhaps, possibly becoming a proper detective by this point. I’d love to have you guys join us for the rest of this rollercoaster ride!

He’s still neglecting the heart though :stuck_out_tongue:

I only started Umineko very recently, and have just started episode 2, so I hope that I can catch you guys up later! Have to say at this point that the story is still a total mystery, although I assume that misdirection is rife…

I wish we did orz it wasn’t until we were getting close to finishing that we thought to record it :frowning: I think we should try for the new game that comes out perhaps. Maybe we can revisit a portion and do some of the voices. The most painful voices was Kinzo for my friend, so raspy. And then we had way too many KFC jokes with Nanjo.

@Aspirety I’m quite excited, I just edited the moment where things finally start to click for me, and it’s one of my favourite, subtle moments in the playthrough so far. Episode 4 has been really agonising to edit because of just how much I did ignore the heart, and as part of a re-read I’m kicking myself over how many easy clues I missed because I just didn’t trust what I was being shown.

I’d also say that this video has a pretty good instance of me finally starting to accept Ryukishi’s writing - accepting Kyrie’s monologue in this video as an important part I think was a valuable moment in me finally starting to agree with the claim that Ryukishi was showing us everything for a reason.

@grooven I’d have to say Kinzo was one of the harder voices to do for me as well. The raspy, old man tone is just too easy to go for. I’d love to hear your friend’s rendition of it :deino:

What a crazy goshdarned chapter this one is, I have literally been waiting for that sound since the beginning of the playthrough. An excellent example of the ‘roller coaster philosophy’ of Ryukishi’s writing, bringing us up to an emotional high that will never be forgotten #goatkunbestgoat

Up next a wild conversation with our completely stable antagonist. This video is super significant for me in the playthrough because this is the moment where things started to click. It’s not an instant switch or sudden epiphany, but if you pay close attention to how I’m speaking, you’ll notice me starting to clue in to some important things here and it’s been one of my favourites to edit.

Glad to see you two pulled this over here, however I will miss all the cackling that we used to do.

@Hovlane Aspi suggested after the Ep8 podcast that we put a thread over here, so we did! The cackles will indeed be missed, but I have a new favourite toy :deino:

New video hype!

So we reach the climax of Ange’s story for this episode. I was a little caught up in still trying to process my realisation during the last chapter so things get a bit loopy (shoutout to 1:15:00). The end of this chapter was also super crazy to me as when I was reading it I started to realise quite how invested I’d gotten invested in Ange as a character. I’m not much a fan of how the beginning of this chapter is paced but the last section is just fantastic. Definitely a prime example of why Ep4 remains one of my favourite episodes.
