Put that down to a sign of the times. I can certainly see that back in 2004 Japan (or even elsewhere) it was generally understood that video games were more of a men’s hobby (regardless of whether women play them or not). These days however, the number of women playing video games is massive, and everybody accepts that girls can like games too.
But I’d rather avoid getting into a huge debate on gender roles here
