Charlotte - Pre-Release Discussion & Speculation

Well, you can usually assume (or at least for Charlotte here) that a season has a complete story, so with a break you’ll be left with a cliffhanger after the first cour and have to wait for the conclusion, and that is what bothers me^^

I do know what you mean with the multi-season shows though, after all I’m still waiting for 3rd seasons of Index and Railgun :frowning:

Is Key guaranteed money money with a high chance of success? The only anime I constantly see brought up are Clannad and Angel Beats (sometimes Air and Kanon but those are mostly in context of KyotoAni over Key). I don’t have sales figures or viewership data to compare it. Also couldn’t Aniplex limit them to a certain cour? No idea if they can or would.

Obviously. Japan loves Key. Proof of that is that Key can be immensely successful with its VNs even without H.

but are VNs and anime not different? I admit I don’t pay attention to what anime Japan likes or what their sales are like for blu rays.

Of course they are, but Key has already a big fanbase it can count on, so success is pretty much guaranteed.

Yeah it was in Dengeki G’s… March I think it was? No clean versions yet, and I don’t think we will be getting those until P.A. Works decides to make more scenery porn of Hoshi no Umi :stuck_out_tongue:

siiiigh all this talk again about 1-cour and 2-cour. Can’t we just respect Meda’s wishes about storytelling?

Then again Aniplex doesn’t necessarily respect those wishes either so… >_>

I guess my only advice to you @sillylittlemelody is don’t expect too much. I know you want it more than just 1-cour, and I definitely want that as well. But if it doesn’t happen and you end up too disappointed because of your expectations, then, well, there will be no saving you

Sure, I’ll get disappointed. But I won’t be crying because of it. If it’s just 1 cour, there’s nothing I can do, unless watch it and enjoy it.

It could go either way. Looking at P.A. Works anime’s, and their episodes, it seems that there has been a pattern. There would be 1 course then 2, then 1 then 2. Shirobako had 2 course, which was their recent anime. Charlotte might have only 1 course of this trend continues. Though Maeda stating that the first half will be slower paced kinda makes me think of a 2 course show, and the fact that I heard in an interview that there’s gonna be more side characters than Angel Beats makes it sound like a 2 course. I also think P.A. Works could have done better animation for it since it’s Key, so it’s obviously gonna be successful, meaning it might be 24 if you look at the quality. Or it could just be laziness, But at teh same time, I think, 12 episodes is gonna be too much to consider (picking up the pace).

Looks like there’s gonna be a pre-broadcast special in Japan: http://charlotte-anime.jp/news/?article_id=34986

They’re gonna be talking about Charlotte info, some production info from PA Works, and a message to viewers.

There’s also gonna be a live talkshow held somewhere in Osaka: http://charlotte-anime.jp/special/talkevent/

They will broadcast on MBS a documentary film like Angel Beats! 5 years ago, but this time for Charlotte.

For anyone didn’t know, the documentary about Angel Beats! here (with English caption): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Abq5Xqq7rgI

Finally read through all the post! Got to say loving all those original ideas for the show

Anyway this kinda reminds me of yumadakun and the seven witches without the only 7 witches part but pike all their powers were non combat oriented and the student council being involved if anyone’s read the manga that goes way beyond the anime (both currently still in production) you’ll know what I’m talking about.

:edit:

Not sure if this is new or not I could barely make sense of it but some event is happening on June 20th for Charlotte heres the post.

…it was hard to resist the obvious pun.

Man I just got a bit more skeptical with Charlotte because of how Marina made that comment about Sala’s backstory. I thought we were under the impression that she wasn’t equal to the main characters, and that side characters wouldn’t have stories… Let alone stories that play a part in the drama, as it takes away from growing the bonds with our main cast and presents not-enough-to-be-interesting but enough-to-desire-more story.

I’m happy she’s getting some treatment, but like, it could be a problem unless we just take it with a grain of salt and try and still leave her existence as a facet of Nao’s character.

The only thing worse than characters with almost nothing, is a bunch of characters that become (Rewrite) Inoue. I DUNNO.

Well, no. The whole plot is the main characters helping the side characters, so it would be a problem if the side characters didnt have stories…

But I get what you’re saying

Kind of reminds me of taiga from Toradora! She was serious in the beginning but eventually as she grew closer to Yuigi she grew out of her shell maybe thats what will happen in Charlotte she starts in the shell shes created and grows out of it as she grows closer to the main character.

This is more one evidence that Charlotte is going to be longer than 1 cour. Side characters with stories that have part on the drama, and given the Charlotte has more side characters than AB!, it needs more than just 1 cour.

And @Bizkitdoh, I don’t understand why you’re skeptical. This is how Key has always worked, and it worked well every time. And I don’t think her importance will be equal to the main characters. Those may have a longer and more well-worked and more dramatic later arc.

@Pepe tried to convince me those side characters could be just like the guy who had a crush on Sasami from LB!. But was there really any reason to even mention them if they were just this important?

Since the beginning I believed that how it was going to work because that’s how it always had. But this isn’t going to get in the middle of the main character’s stories. Charlotte needed something as introductory conflicts, and as Key always work with character-focused stories, it is the side characters that will move the show in the beginning.

If you notice, in VNs there were routes. In each route the protagonist had to help the given character with something. Key animes have been no different. Both in AB! and Charlotte, Key has found a way to make the protagonist help others (in Charlotte’s case it’s the student council duty).

This is anime and not how Maeda works all the time and the time he worked this way it was very problematic.

That would be why.

Aren’t you a hardcore AB! fan?

Do you mean Hibiki no Mahou? And I said how “Key” works all the time, not Maeda (excluding Planetarian, since I don’t know much about it).

Basically every Key work was problematic, then. Expand this, please.

That anime was a train wreck and I hate it.

No, the Angel Beats! anime. The first iteration of Maeda anime original story telling, Charlotte being his second time writing for anime. Seeing above, this explains why I have some apprehension and skepticisms of how well it will turn out. Also be sure to note that this anime is heavily Maeda + NaGa and they just so happen to be affiliated with Key as of this time and as such Key is free to advertise for it and probably throw in a word or two, but its outcome will mainly depend on Maeda and the animators relationships and how well he can write under such restrictions. It’s a very similar situation with AB!, only this time they’re working to best what they admit did not go as well as it should have. It’s the sole point of comparison here.

I’m… I’m not sure how to respond to this one seeing as you mistook the entire statement, but well yeah every Key work has some flaws though. I’m sure this one will have its fair share.

No, actually its not, because the original statement was, there will be more side character than in AB, but the story will mostly focus on the four main characters.

VNs and anime are not mediums that are easily adapted into one another, and VN routes and anime arcs really aren’t as similar as you’re making them out to be. In fact, VN adaptations are infamous for not being very great anime.

And yes every Key work is problematic in some way. This is only increased in the anime adaptation though, since Key loves so much to use the technical uniqueness of VNs to the fullest.

Also, Angel Beats! had plans to be a multimedia project from the beginning. This is only supposed to be an anime. Hopefully, especially with Maeda’s experience from how AB turned out, Charlotte will be written with that in mind.
