A new title is in development by Key!

I hope it won’t be as convoluted as Rewrite and be closer to what the games were like prior.

He’s also written Holy Breaker but nobody really mentions the quality of that lol. But yeah it would be interesting to have Leo Kashida on board once again.

So what kind of a setting would a new VN need to have to make it nostalgic? You have to be more specific than that!

Follow-up question: What is lacking in Little Busters and Rewrite that don’t make them nostalgic? They seem pretty similar to Clannad or Air to me in terms of “nostalgia factor”

And now there are a few other people who agree with wanting to see a “classic” game and I’m still here confused as to what you guys mean by “classic” or “nostalgic” because, bar Kanon, all Key games feel the same level of “classic”. At least @sanata50lbsb specified what he meant about supernatural things being part of the story.

For me at least, I can’t really say Rewrite is all that nostalgic if only because supernatural elements play such a huge factor. CLANNAD and Little Busters! for me are both fairly nostalgic because, for at least the common route and parts of the girls’ routes, they are just an ordinary, if somewhat eccentric, high school life. Rewrite is different from the beginning. We learn that the protagonist has superpowers what, like 2 minutes in?

But I don’t get how litbus could possibly be seen as less nostalgic than Air or Clannad.

They always have?
Kanon Ayu being in a coma but still running around, Makoto turning from a fox to human, Mai’s tears
Air Michru being dead yet again running around, Yukito becoming Sora, Kano being possessed, Misuzu’s entire route
Clannad Fuko again, coma yet running around, the entire Illusionary World/orbs of light, Shima becoming a cat
Little BustersMidori replacing Mio, the entire world (can’t remember LB very much)

I think what you mean is starting seeming like there’s no supernatural stuff before transitioning which I can understand. I’m personally fine with either way but I can see why someone would want a story that at least is somewhat grounded.

Ok I just realized I didn’t proofread my post. It seems you understand what I meant but I’d be mad with myself if I don’t articulate myself a bit better.

In Clannad/Kanon/Little Busters! there are definitely supernatural elements present from the beginning but you generally don’t find out about them until later in the game. In Little Busters! I don’t recall there being anything outright supernatural in the entire common route. There are references to the “Secret of this World” but even Riki suggests it may just be a prank. Clannad’s common route also doesn’t have anything you find out about iirc. And orbs of light aside many routes don’t have any supernatural elements.

These games give you a chance to connect to the characters as ordinary humans, THEN throw the crazy shit at you. Rewrite: although in rewrite other characters also follow this pattern with you not finding out about their abilities until later

In general Key games let you get connected to the characters and their boring lives THEN they hit you with the real crazy shit. Kotarou’s life is anything but boring or normal.

As someone who isn’t too big of an Angel Beats fan, I was worried they would focus on that and go awhile without releasing an original big one. So, this makes me pretty darn excited for what they have in store for this. Regarding the writer(s), it’s almost as if people forgot Tanaka was brought in just for Rewrite. I know I’ve said this before, but now I can concretely say I’d be interested in them bringing in someone new again for this next work. Maybe Scaji can write something for them now that he finally finished Sakura no Uta hohoho. (that’s totally not going to happen)

I feel the need to point out that I kind of hated Holy Breaker. It was pretty bad.

An original work? Non Angel Beats related? Key’s next big work? Not posted on april 1st??

This could mean that maybe, if we hope, then just maybe. A long awaited release of Creamy*Kagarin!

I stand by my assertion in the Discord chat:

Exactly my thoughts. If I’m not mistaken in one of the interviews Maeda confirmed that he still has not started working on it yet so the projec is probably on hold considering the lack of news. If Maeda isn’t going to work on this title I see a great chance of him falling out from the flow again. I really hope there is nothing serious behind this

Was it mentioned anywhere that he has some sort of long term illness?

The evidence suggests it.
And Maeda has said that he’s finalised planning for the routes of most characters, it’s just that we haven’t heard anything from him since he said he was going to hospital.

Just a setting for people in a town we all love with humans in an environment that isn’t major on the supernatural elements, as opposed to things like Angel Beats, Charlotte, or Rewrite (which are all still great by all means).

I don’t know if this was appointed to me or not, but I was just naming the first 3 Key titles that established them as a brand. Friendly-Nostalogia I should say. Rewrite is more hardcore with the supernatural elements (for me) that it doesn’t feel nostalgic most of the time. At the end of the day, it’s just how much contribution you put in for the supernatural elements.

Maeda’s not doing the whole thing Yunno. I remember he said that he can’t write like he used to, so he writes half of a certain route, or writes bits of it, while others like Leo or Kai writes the rest. I’m pretty sure that there are some people working on AB 2nd Beat for the mean-time. Knowing Maeda, I’m pretty sure with all the stress between AB 1st, to Charlotte, to AB 2nd, to writing new music, is very much for him. As much as I would want AB’s story to just come out fully, instead of having to wait 6-12 years for the entire thing to come out, I’d rather have Maeda and the other writers do it at their pace to make it the best that they can, rather than have it rushed just for the sake of getting it out.
I would hate to see them rushing into back stories like Shiina’s, Yusa’s, Hisako’s, and etc.
But considering Maeda does love music, I’m pretty sure he’s been spending his time writing new music for AB and new Key works. He’s probably thinking of the OP’s/ED’s for the upcoming beats, and the new OST’s/BGM’s that will be used in the upcoming beats, and upcoming Key VN’s. Just give him time. It’s better to have Maeda the best that he can be, rather than pressure him into writing when he doesn’t feel like it…

But anyways. Kashida writing the new Key story would not be a surprise at all, considering he’s worked on AB 1st, and has his ties with Key still being strong. Oh, it would be interesting if it was a Shirokiri story with what we’ve seen from Haruka’s and Kanata’s routes (and Kud). Other than the 2 obvious and talented people (Jun Maeda & Shinji Orito) I’d love to Hear at least 2 of these composers help out. Jun’ichi who has worked on Kud Wafter’s music (Grief, Adagio for Summer Wind, Hoshikuzu), Ryo Mizutsuki who has worked on Rewrite and Little Busters! (Scattered Flowers, Scene Shifts There), Magomi Togoshi who worked on Tomoyo After (Worth Living), Manack who has worked on Little Busters! (Days of tears and lilies), Magome Togoshi who has worked on CLANNAD, Planetarian, Little Busters!, AIR,Kanon, etc. (Shining in the sky, Ushio, Gentle Gena), and OdiakeS who worked on Kanon (Shojo no Ori).

But didn’t they already quit Key? D:

I wish it didn’t take me 3 rounds of back-and-forth to get this answer from you; you could have said it more specifically in your first post.

But yeah, to me, just because something is down-to-earth and lacks supernatural elements in the setting does not, by any means, make it nostalgic; which is why I wish you specified it in the first place.

I thought it was obvious. The shift in environment from CLANNAD/Kanon/Air/LitBus isn’t the same as AB/Rewrite/Charlotte. Yes, by all means, same Key formulas (maybe not Charlotte), but doesn’t have that same feel.

I honestly felt a bigger shift from Kanon/AIR to Clannad/Little Busters, and a lot of people put that line of “nostalgia” in between Clannad and Little Busters which seems very weird to me :kudshock: Probably because KyoAni

I personally think that Totoro’s opinion was pretty clear to understand, he just wants the next Key show to be more Key-ish than the recent ones.

Something that is meaningful but has a small scale, not something that involves the whole world like Charlotte and Rewrite.

tbh I’m fine if we get another Action/Seinen VN like Rewrite and I’m also fine if we get something like Clannad or LB.

As long as it delivers the meaning well and has super lovable and memorable characters like every other Key VN.

Labeling something as “Key-ish” is extremely vague :masdum: I still felt Angel Beats and Rewrite were Key-ish; very much so, in fact.

Indeed they are Key-ish, but not as Key-ish as Clannad and LB
thats why I said “more”

Again, that’s still very vague. I didn’t feel that Rewrite was any less Key-ish than Clannad or Kanon.
