Summer Pockets - Ping Pong Discussion

Topic for talking about the ping pong minigame as well as sharing your achievements. Please tag story spoilers with the [spoiler] tag with adequate context provided in parenthesis.

The game is all about clicking target areas to hit back Tenzen’s shots. You earn more points the better your timing is, and the game gives more points the longer the game goes along with increased difficulty. The game is dictated by the tension bar on the left side of the screen; hits will fill the bar and misses will drain it. The game ends if the tension goes to 0. When the bar maxes out, Tenzen will go into the zone. In the zone, there are 2 extra target areas, and the tension will drain from everything that isn’t an excellent hit.

Decided Mode
The simplest mode where Tenzen only shoots 10 shots.

Score Details

Base score - Earned by hitting balls with good timing.
Combo bonus - X% extra points, where X is your highest combo.
Zone bonus - 1% extra points for each number of times Tenzen entered his zone.

Endless Mode
The second mode continues until the tension gauge reaches 0. The target areas change colors with consecutive hits (blue>yellow>red>purple>gold). Scoring a hit on a gold area multiplies your score.

Time bonus - 1% extra points for every 10 seconds the game lasted.

Extreme Mode
A no-holds-barred match versus Tenzen. Tenzen will use all kinds of crazy techniques, so prepare for anything. The target areas change colors with consecutive hits (blue>yellow>red>purple>rainbow). Scoring a hit on a rainbow area let’s you use a super shot of your own. Hitting Tenzen with a super shot will deal damage to and eventually defeat him. Unlike the other modes, this one also evolves the more you play it. Tenzen will develop more difficult shots, and after a while you get the ability to play the mode infinitely.

Title Bonuses
There are a total of six different bonuses available to you that are based on which titles you’ve received. You can only have one bonus at a time, and it’s based on the most recent one. Four of the bonuses come from the first choice in the prologue; the other two are obtained in other ways.

  • Wounded bird: When you deal damage, you have higher chance for Tenzen to get blown away.
  • Canary: Tenzen’s tension gauge will go down at a reduced rate.
  • Boxer: You’ll receive an extra 10000 points for executing a successful super shot.
  • Host: Tenzen’s tension gauge will increase at a greater rate.
  • Cursed: Tenzen’s shot are slower. [You get this title by buying shaved ice during the Umi event on July 29]
  • Ping Pong God: You can battle Tenzen endlessly in serious mode. [You get this title by beating Tenzen in serious mode twice.]

Secret Attacks

  • Going to the candy shop on August 1st and asking for a secret technique will give you an ability that slows time in the game.
  • Making offerings at the shrine will let you pray to become stronger. You need to pray to Inari and offer as much money as you can. After that Inari will sometimes help you in serious games by making your super shot unblockable.

Some Tips for serious mode.

  • Using curse is easiest way to clear. If you get the power to curse, you can slow down all the Tenzen shot after you damaged Tenzen in the game. To get the power you have to go to Dagashiya on 7/29 and choose to order shaved ice. (This also means you can’t play Shimamon?) The effect disappears if you become god of ping pong(卓球神)

  • In the serious mode, Tenzen uses some special shots: curve, dropping, spinning(spiral?) (舞掛処撥斗, buke-shohatto), shaking (魂伝影念獅坐威砲, konden-einen-shizaihou) and returning (六波羅反台, rokuhara-tandai).

  • 舞掛処撥斗 derives from 武家諸法度 , 魂伝影念獅坐威砲 derives from 墾田永年私財法 and 六波羅反台derives from 六波羅探題. All are words in Japanese history. (And many students have to memorize in elementary school)

  • If you got god of ping pong(卓球神) title in the route (Probably, You have to earn 30 million points in the route(amount to 2 K.O.)), you can continue playing ping pong after you knocked out Tenzen. This means you can earn more points in the game. In the game, Tenzen comes to use two special shots, one is slow ball and the other is Tenzen(天全).
Tenzen is a shot which ball multiply to the same number as the number of targets and you can hit only one ball.
Under the true ball (and on the table), you can find shadow, and this seems the only way to discern the ball (and it is very hard to hit it).

The curse was so obnoxious that I just got the achievement and bailed. Didn’t think about any actual gameplay effects.

Oh that makes it a whole lot easier. I just noticed the true ball lagging a couple of frames behind. Like, in the pic the shadow could point to two of them, but the top one is slightly out of formation.

That’s 3 KOs, fuck this game…

I’m never replicating this one probably (Sure it was the lowest difficulty, but still what the hell)

Updated the OP with details on how the first choice of the game will affect the mini game. In short: Wounded makes it easier to beat Tenzen, so you can get to infinite serious easier. Canary gives you more “health,” so mistakes are less costly. Boxer will get you a bunch of extra points. Host will let you “heal” faster, though it generally seems like the worst one.
