Just now, Sekai Project have quietly launched their Clannad prefundia page to prepare backers for the launch of their Clannad Official English Release Kickstarter. To put it simply, you've been given some time to look at the reward tiers, and prepare your wallet for what's coming~
The Kickstarter will include many rewards for backers depending on how much they pay, including the digital artbook included with the original Limited Edition release in Japan, a digital download of the Clannad Mabinogi Arrange Album, B2 tapestries, exclusive T-shirts, and mini-shikishi drawn by Itaru Hinoue, the artist of Clannad. And if Sekai Project are able to meet a certain stretch goal from all the money they've raised, they'll also be offering a physical hard-copy release of Clannad too, with the opportunity to receive a copy autographed by Itaru Hinoue herself for the few willing to spend over $800!
So, are you as excited as we are? Which reward tiers are you looking at spending your money on?
EDIT: Sekai Project have started revealing details about the Kickstarter. They plan to run the Kickstarter for 60 days, "running well past christmas". We'll be posting more details as they arise!
I really want the 800 tier, but that will require a certain finesse in timing, as well as some arrangements to make sure I have the money. If not, I guess I’ll have to settle for the 230 and get a physical copy add-on.
And of course, these are all just tentative, so they could change based on feedback and other stuff by the time the campaign starts.
Sekai certainly seems to be pushing digital downloads for their Clannad Prefundia. In addition, several of the rewards are based off of smaller items or re-releases of original items. While the strategy is sensible from a profitability standpoint, will the rewards offered be enough to support an endeavor of this size?
As it stands, I suspect that many who choose to donate will do so for the sake of contributing to the larger effort as opposed to for the prizes offered. It will be interesting to see if they modify their offerings before the campaign starts. It would be beneficial for them to clarify/elaborate on if the physical album releases will be identifiable from the originals in some way (or if they are originals from 2004) and if the digital Clannad fanbook being offered will be translated in English. (The Clannad Official Guidebook, released with the limited first edition of the game, contains 82 pages, so I’ll assume this is the fanbook they are describing.)
I think it all depends on how large their target will be. Grisaia’s was $40,000 and I am expecting CLANNAD to be a bit higher. The reason I guess for pushing digital downloads is that there is a large amount of logistics needed to create and send physical copies, after all. And you have to note, while most of them seem to be bonuses from the First Press Limited Edition, not everybody has access to that. On Amazon ( http://www.amazon.co.jp/KEY-CLANNAD--クラナド--初回限定版/dp/B0001MMHB2/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1415239593&sr=8-10&keywords=CLANNAD ) that costs nearly $100 already which can get you a tapestry. Thus I think it is pretty sensible assuming you don’t already own that limited edition.
And yeah I just posted a comment regarding the OST. I believe it is still in print so getting it from places like cdjapan would be cheaper than the additional $60 you’d have to pay to get it on Kickstarter.
Of course, part of that $60 goes into the funding of the English release, but from a business standpoint, that’s one thing that they have to take note of.
(well actually… Buying it off cdjapan and having it shipped to the US via EMS is already $55 so… fair price if you live far away from Japan)

Quite a bit higher, actually. According to their project outline: “We are looking to raise $100,000 with a stretch goal of $140,000 to allow us to offer a physical edition of CLANNAD.” As it stands, the physical copy of Clannad will not become available as a reward until the $140,000 stretch goal is achieved.
Oh wow I didn’t read that part oops. Went straight to reading the rewards
Yeah that is quite a lot. But like I said, for those who are getting it for the rewards and not the support, I still think it’s a fair price because, like I said, you either pay $100 for the limited edition from Japan, or the same amount for digital versions of everything plus a tapestry. I guess it’s a digital vs physical debate now but, like I said, it takes a significantly higher amount of logistics for physical releases.
So THIS is very interesting. They’re saying they’d like to try and get the PS3 Assets of VA in order to produce a higher resolution build of the game. I’d say the chances of this eventuating are probably pretty slim, but I want to believe! A HD PC release of Clannad wouldn’t just get our money, everyone in Japan would be jumping for it too!
Oh hey! The rewards seem a lot more flexible now. I’ll surely find a package that suits me now
Also, I didn’t mention, but that plot synopsis is very… Elegent. I’ve seen attempts made to provide blurbs of Clannad before, and that’s probably the best I’ve seen.
Actually, yeah, you’re right. On that note, I think most of the blurbs of Clannad that don’t give spoilers make it seem like some random harem comedy where nothing happens.
I never dreamed this day would come, when the prospect of playing an official localization of this game (no ungodly expensive import, no shoddy translation) would come to pass! I’ve already pledged for a physical copy, and the money’s been steadily rolling in ever since the page went up a mere 25 minutes ago–$23,500 and counting!
