Rewrite Anime - Episode 10 "Simply, As Friends"

Yeah I can agree on that, because “Simply as friends” at least for me… its rather weird. “Simply as a friend” is a better way to put it.

I must have missed that scene earlier before. The significance of that scene which I think I recognized had to have been Kotori’s parents in the coffins after the accident that she spent those 10 years in the forest while making familiars as a Druid. It didn’t occur to me that while I was looking at it again that it made sense now why that was necessary to show that.

The mood in this episode was all over the place again.

With Sakuya supporting Kotarou and Chihaya being on her way as well, I guess I’ll have to bid farewell to the seriousness of the original Rewrite for good. In fact, this is pretty much Chihaya route already.

That would be moon all over again. The image of Yoshino fighting off Dinosaurs with a spear in the opening even supports your theory. But if they do this now, they can’t just repeat it later. So either they’ll make massive changes to the moon route or they don’t adapt it at all. No matter how I look at it, I can only see horrible consequences and implications.

Thoughts of the series’ future aside, I quite liked the episode itself. There’s more brand-new development, all girls get an adequate amount of screentime while interacting among each-other (not just with Kotarou) and the bonds between the occult club members remain important. We can view the situation from multiple perspectives. The anime is doing these things right. And then there’s the implied death of a heroine. I definitely did not expect that.

Of course, if I were to be more nitpicky, there’s still stuff to point out, like how Midou’s reaction speed and kinetic vision could miraculously keep up with the movements of a superhuman…

Well then, an important battle took place with losses on both Gaia’s and Guardian’s side.
Tenjin and Tenma didn’t interfere with the fight, which means they remained unconscious the whole time. They should be dead now. Poisoned, crushed by fallen trees and burned to a crisp. Not that it matters, since Krivoy Rog and Killimanjaro are gone, anyway. Midou shouldn’t survive his poisoning, either. Lucia might or might not be dead. Though depending on how serious or realistic they want to make this series, the body count of this fight could be pretty much anything between 0 and 4.

Most of this episode was all over the place, and the emotions it tried to invoke were really…not there (the super strange Yuriha placement, and then Akane literally bursting into tears at Kagari’s answer when it wasn’t even a serious response about Salvation in the first place). There was a lot more ridiculous quality than the last ep, too, and the scene shifts and mood swings were really jarring.

I’m really, REALLY glad no actual oppai grabbing took place. Ten episodes in was a little too much for these jokes to still be teased in the first place, imo, but at least it was kept at a minimum and nothing actually happened.

Complaints aside, the twist ending was very Tanaka. I’m interested to see where this goes, and if (Rewrite Moon route) the other heroines might die in the same order they did in Moon. Which should mean, Lucia, Kotori, Akane, Shizuru, Chihaya, iirc.

This episode went from 100 to 0 to 100 real quick…

My thoughts on this are the same as @BlackHayate02’s. I mean, Itsuwaranai Kimi e plays in Lucia’s route too.

Still, I felt like the music was all over the place in this episode. You had songs that started and ended in the span of 10 seconds and Rewrite turning into Brown Spot disease (Rewrite didn’t even need to play there…). It’s pretty distracting and quite frankly kinda irritating.

I always feel the same about the comedy: why. Most of the time it just feels out of place. But I’ve come to realize that it really represents Kotarou as someone who can keep his chin up in desperate situations. The format of joking around for the first half of an episode followed by serious things happening in the second help keep the audience aware that something big is coming, while showing that Kotarou is ready for it.

Akane’s tears were actually justified. When you’re asking a being that will decide over the fate of your entire species about the reason behind their task, “I don’t know” is not an acceptable answer.

Remember what Gaians, especially those surrounding the holy woman/saint are like. (mild Akane and Terra spoilers) They are broken people who can’t come to terms with the world as it is. They are deeply depressed or even suicidal. What keeps them going is the noble cause of saving the planet, even if it means the annihilation of their species. Those are the people Akane is surrounded by and takes care of every day.

What Akane wanted from Kagari were two things:

  1. To confirm the nobility of Gaia’s cause and
  2. To find out if total annihilation is unavoidable.
After all, if the Key is taking its time judging humans, what reasons could it have to consider sparing them?

But the one who will decide their fate is completely clueless. That’s pretty much the worst possible answer.

But Instrumental Rewrite does play during Oppai Route. Thing is, it happens after you finish the game. So, the oppai scene might feel out of place. In my opinion, the songs placement in the anime adaptation are fine and similar in the way they were presented in the VN.

My observations:

1- It felt rushed? Yes. But no point in complaining that. We knew this would happen. And if I was Tensho, I wouldn’t do any better. Hahahaha.

2- By now, we can safely say there is another Cour coming. Or maybe something shorter. Moon + Terra aren’t big enough for 13 episodes, I think. Maybe they will use 2-5 episodes in next Cour to show Kotarou’s memories about the club. After all, we saw some of these scenes during the Prologue, at Episode 1. For me, the big question is when this new Cour will premiere… T_T

3- I wanted Koutarou to tell us more about this thoughts on Kagari. To destroy or to protect her? I dunno, at least say it’s because of Kotori or some intuition about it. His reasons are feeling something really shallow like in Chihaya Route.

4- Thoughts on the Coffins? The photo of Kotori and Koutarou? ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

5- I can’t believe I will not see more Lucia until the end of this… BUT, like Aspirety said, her story is now relevant! Hahahaha

I know that Akane is (Rewrite, Akane route and Terra route)deeply suicidal, and that Gaians as a whole want the Salvation of the planet to occur so that humanity will be wiped out. Akane’s route is actually my favorite in the entirety of Rewrite, and I honestly enjoy the darker themes it explored.

What I’m saying is that it was poorly handled in the anime. The mood swings are almost giving whiplash to the audience at this point. Going from comedic Sakuya training antics and casual shopping with the embodiment of the planet’s will, to emotional reunion with former classmates, to Akane crying at a moment’s notice, to boob route teasing, is just not good directing. It was too forced, and all at once.

Not to mention, (Rewrite, Akane and Chihaya route)when Kagari decided not to enact Salvation in Chihaya’s route, Akane didn’t break down immediately. She and Kashima Sakura have had the choir ready to enact their own Salvation from start to finish. Even in her own route when Kagari was “killed,” she showed little to no emotion other than “Well, you tried your best” to Kotarou. Akane is always someone who has had her own plans (or rather, Kashima’s plans) arranged in order to achieve Gaia’s ideals, even if a wrench is thrown into them sooner or later.

Having her suddenly in tears with a 55 yen can of coffee in her hands kind of feels out of place considering the only time Akane’s facade ever crumbles and she breaks down crying is (Akane route) at the end of her own route, when Kotarou tells her to live and suffer.

I don’t mind having some actual Akane scenes in the anime that are not ALL about boobs, for once! I really love her as a character and I want to see them handle even bits and pieces of her backstory with the level of emotion it deserves in this adaptation. But this episode was so rushed that it felt severely out of place. That’s all I’m getting at.

Now,
If the one saying “people is not acting calmly” ultimately decided to put their friends above their mission and put herself in danger. I don’t think the other one would be stopped for long.
She’ll be fine, I think.

If I had to pick the weirdest thing about the adaptation for me, it would be the fact that nobody seems nearly as focused on the Key like they were in the VN. It’s true that Lucia says the key is more important at first, but it never felt like she even wanted to find it anyway. In the VN, she was much more focused on guardian’s goal (not to say she shouldn’t have decided to try saving Kotarou). But yeah overall, the importance of the Key seems to be very undermined as even Akane sees the key in front of her and lets her go, which I didn’t expect based on how she acts in the VN by this point.

All the heroines are more with Kotarou than their own organizations after just the time they had together in the occult club. This differs a lot from the VN, as they heroines in each route typically would be fighting for their organization mainly up until Kotarou ends up following them around and they get more attached to him. I think the way they did that works for what they’re doing here, which seems somehow like they all are trying to make an effort to be friends again at the end.

I also have no clue what’ll happen to/with Akane and I think Lucia is alive (If not, I’m not sure what they will do for Kotarou’s reaction). Other than that, Kotori, Chihaya and Shizuru would pretty much abandon their old responsibilities right now to help Kotarou accomplish whatever he decides to do. I just wish they would smooth out the pacing to have less jumps from serious to comedic parts and it would feel less like I’m being pushed out of immersion.

My thoughts on the episode:

Now, on a more serious note… I kind of liked this episode! The boob jokes and the weird music placement annoyed me quite a bit, not to mention the more than lacking fight scenes, but I still think they’re going in an interesting direction. I agree with some people in this thread that this is going to be a failed branch, and I’m wondering if they’re trying to do this as a sort of “replacement” for Moon so they can later on do a Terra adaptation (yeah… maybe not but let me dream).

The rewrite ability explanations were too short in my opnion, but I’ll chalk that up to the anime touching back on it later (Chihaya’s Route spoiler) when Sakuya transforms into legendary pokemon Sakuya, probably, but it’s very interesting that Kagari is having those little short-circuit moments of becoming the Key again! I wonder if her mind is going to deteriorate any further… it’d remind me a lot of (Kanon spoilers) the way in which Makoto kept regressing into a fox little by little, but without the awkward sex scene.

I do hope that Lucia is alive, but I think it’s unlikely… even if the lance hadn’t killed her, that fall should’ve finished the job. Then again, this is sci-fi/fantasy, so if anyone can recover from falling down a very conveniently placed cliff, it’s these children! More so if Shizuru is on her way.

Please let this be the end of the oppai jokes…

Honestly I’m not 100% accepting that Lucia is dead quite yet. I’ve seen to many anime asspull saves to not be suspicious right now. But then they could be going for a pseudo-Moon route this season and maybe next season we’ll get a pseudo-terra

The pacing itself wasn’t too bad for the anime’s standards, but character’s expressions changed with awkward timings.

I’m still slightly skeptical of the adaptation because Key has a way with ruining their anime only stuff right at the end, but this was a good episode.

Is everyone forgetting that they confirmed Lucia v Shizuru is happening in the anime?
Quote from a Dengeki interview back in December:
脚本 / Scenario guy

"バトルはやはり、ルチアさんと静流が、がんばってくれてますね。
You’re working hard on the battle with Lucia and Shizuru as expected."
In response to Tanaka.

You should post the whole context of the text because it’s very hard to know what they’re talking about otherwise. For example, that sentence doesn’t necessarily refer to a battle between Lucia and Shizuru. It could be about them fighting along side each other or battling in general apart from each other.

原作のほうで戦うシーンもあるから、それがアニメで動くのを早く観たいです。もともと『Rewrite』は女の子の戦い、バトルを描きたかったというところもあるので、特に楽しみにしてます。でも、もう動きを見る限り安心してます。
In the original game there’s fight scenes, I wanted to hurry up and see the animated version of it.
Originally, “Rewrite” was a battle of the girls, and I also wanted to draw battles, so I’m looking toward to this in particular.
But now from what I’m seeing of the animation, I am now at peace of mind.

田中 / Tanaka
バトルシーンもかなりまとまった量があるという印象ですね。この会議に入ったとき、「バトルはちょっと控えめでいきます」みたいな話があったんですよ。そのつもりでいたんですが、実際は全然多かったですね(笑)。
There’s the impression there’s quite a lot of battle scenes arranged together. When I entered this meeting, there was a discussion about ‘cutting down on the battles’.
We intended to leave it as that, but it turns out there wasn’t that many really (laughs).

魁 / Kai
確かに最初にそう言われましたね。
Certainly you did say that in the beginning.

田中 / Tanaka

僕の感覚ではバトル少なめというと、2、3話に1回ぐらいなのかなという感覚だったんですが、1話に2、3回はあるかなと、それは多いほうだと思うんですが(笑)。
In my sense, few battles would be like one battle per very 2 or 3 episodes, but actually on one episode two or three would be quite a lot I think (laughs).

脚本 / Scenario guy

バトルはやはり、ルチアさんと静流が、がんばってくれてますね。
You’re working hard on the battle with Lucia and Shizuru as expected.

田中 / Tanaka

バトルといえば、ゲームではなかった新衣装も結構あるんですよね。
あっ、そういえばルチアの新衣装が
いたるさんデザインなんでしたっけ?
Speaking of the battle, there’s quite a lot of clothes in the anime that weren’t in the game. Ah, speaking of which, wasn’t it you that designed the new clothes for Lucia, Itaru-san?

樋上 / Hinoue

デザインをいろいろしました。ルチアの戦闘服もそうなんですけど、ゲームにはなかったけどアニメでは必要な衣装などデザインしているんです。
I designed many different ones. Like Lucia’s combat uniform, I’m designing a lot of clothes that I think are needed in the anime that weren’t in the game.

I just think that there’s nothing else that could’ve been referring to. I don’t think they were referring to the Nov. 13th one with the raptor familiars.

After seeing this episode, somehow I can’t see a season two following up after this. Feels a lot that they planned to wrap Terra and Moon next episode; make sense seeing how fast-paced this anime has been.

It’s really refreshing to see Sakuya and Kotori and Kagari together. His hicof is probably too strong for the avatar of the earth, lol.

and that ending… Why… :frowning:

That’s the point of this kind of advertisement. They make vague statements which leads to fans making assumptions which creates speculation and excitement. That also makes it practically impossible to translate as the translator is also forced to make assumptions. Now in hind sight, we can see that “バトルはやはり、ルチアさんと静流が、がんばってくれてますね,” would translate into something like “Speaking of battles, that is a lot of work for Lucia and Shizuru.”

That joke is in Rewrite Quest, though it was bit different then. Kagari does recognize that Sakuya’s coffee is better than Kotarou’s, but she prefers the latter. Sakuya describes it as his coffee not having enough love.

“lucia is death” is not what i expected from this original. at least make another side character like imamiya maybe to death

Finally checked out this episode, and damn, what an episode indeed. Yeah, I can definitely agree that the mood was all over the place… up until after kotarou’s meeting with Akane.

Everything after that? absolutely perfect. We see Kotarou’s motivations for protecting Kagari, a motivation we were never told in the VN, but can explain Kotarou’s motivation in every single route. We see how Lucia is willing to protect both Shizuru and the rest of the occult club, all while still sticking to her duty. We see how Akane genuinely cares for Chihaya and the rest of them, even though she is doomed.

And the final battle was just simply, absolutely, stunning. Not only was the song placement spot-on (haters gonna hate), the way the battle synced with the song was terrific! The highs and lows of the song were accompanied by the highs and lows of the battle, and the emotional tension for Lucia’s part can be felt right as it happens; her willingness to protect, her reluctance to use her power… and her death.

When I first watched this episode, I just simply could not believe what happened. I thought it a ballsy move, and I just hoped they’d ride along with it. At this point, I wouldn’t be surprised if she actually survived, because they put in quite a lot of effort to show that she was stabbed on a side of her body that could have been non-lethal (if the fall doesn’t kill her at least); but if they have the balls to let her sacrifice be permanent, then so be it. I completely accept this turn-of-events.
