Her birthday is the 1st of March.

Oh, yeah, Kaori. She is important to Shiori’s route, isn’t she? Okay…

When someone you know and love very much is about to die, what would you do? Would you stay by their side until the end? Would you do everything you can to avert their fate?

How about completely ignoring their existence so as to not let the pain of a loved one’s death get to you?

Kaori is the first of many troubled individuals in Key works who decide to go down this path, hiding their feelings and ignoring their pain, just so they can function properly in society. In Kaori’s case, she refuses to acknowledge her sister in order to hide her grief. The problem with this is that it not only hurts her sister’s feelings, but it also motivates Shiori to seek out someone that can care for her. Thus she meets Yuuichi, and the rest goes on from there.

Now, is Kaori at fault when she decides to alienate herself from her sister? Perhaps, but keep in mind that we do not know if she’s had to deal with death before. This may be the first time she’s had to deal with this situation, so she had no idea that she was doing the right thing or not. It’s natural to be afraid of pain, especially the emotional pain of losing someone, so what she did was somewhat justified. However, it is not the best way of going around it, and Yuuichi helped her realize that, in addition to giving Shiori the support that Kaori could never give her.

So, is Kaori a bad character? Not at all. She’s just doing what she thinks is right, and there’s nothing wrong with that. But it is always better to face the situation rather than run away from it.

So today, I wish a very happy birthday to Kaori Misaka!

Episode 17 of Re:Zero had a Kaori reference in it, so if you’re watching that show, look out for it.
