Regarding the talk on fox tails and their age, it’s mentioned that none of that seems to factor into Kanon. You’re missing that Makoto is a twin-tailed fox. Even in the anime adaptation, the real Makoto doesn’t have her hair in pig-tails.
Also, talking about the ending, Nayuki’s ended in a similar way. It’s all down to interpretation.That’s Kanon~

I agree with Aspi’s take that the relationship between Makoto and Yuuichi is not tainted by Makoto digression. Sure it is part of what shaped their relationship but his love is not less valid because of the circumstance it was under.

I do not take Makoto’s appearance in the end to really be her coming back. I felt like that was just his hope? Though it is kind of strange because “miracles” are really a theme in Kanon it seems
