Welcome back everyone!
Part 18: Uprooting the fourth Gym
Lunar: “You’re going to accompany me to the Gym, but first some of you need some training.”
Lunar: “Okay. Genji, you are weak against the grass types here and thus can’t do much with your water type moves, so I want you to use Bite in battle. Atsuko, electric types aren’t very effective either, so use Slam instead. HYPER FANG, just use Hyper Fang and follow up with Quickattack should your opponent still stand. Maddie, you use Cut, it’s still your strongest move. Should your opponent seem to have a high defense, though, use Bite instead. snake, you are best off using Bite as well, as most grass types also have the poison type. Johnny, as you don’t have any fire type moves yet, Quickattack is your best bet. These strategies apply for the whole arena, make me proud!”
Winning Trainers: Sol
Lunar: “Figures he’s faster.”
Lass: “Only real ladies are allowed in here!”
Lunar: “Well, I’m not applying to join this Gym, I only want to challenge its leader.”
Lunar: “You know what to do!”
Kay: “Bleaah! I hope Erika wipes you out!”
Lunar: “Go ahead, snake!”
Bridgit: “Grass-type Pokémon are tough against the Water type. They also have an edge on Rock- and Ground-type Pokémon.”
Lunar: “Well, I already knew that, but thanks anyway.”
Lunar: “You must mistake me for that old guy who seems to constantly peek into here.”
Lunar: “Also, when I entered, I just looked straight ahead.”
Tina: “Oh, you were looking at Erika… You weren’t looking at me…”
Lunar: “Wait, do you want to be spied on?”
Tina: “Well… Uhm… No… But…”
Beauty: “I like the Grass type. I like how they’re easy to raise.”
Tamia: “We only use Grass-type Pokémon at our Gym. Why? We also use them for making flower arrangements!”
Lunar: “Yeah, I think most other types aren’t as helpful for making decorations of any kind, really.”
Lass: “We don’t like Bug- or Fire-type Pokémon in here!”
Lass Lisa would like to battle!
Lunar: “Ugh, that paralysis was annoying! Genji, you get a chance!”
Lisa: “Our Leader Erika might be quiet, but she’s famous around here.”
Lunar: “So that’s why there are so many Trainers in here? You all like and admire her?”
Lisa: “Yep!”
Cooltrainer: “You’d better not underestimate the nice ladies here.”
Lunar: “Don’t worry, if I hate one thing, it’s people underestimating me, so I won’t underestimate my foes either.”
Lunar: “Let’s try this again, Atsuko.”
Lunar: “Okay, that’s enough! HYPER FANG, finish this!”
Mary: “I didn’t bring my best Pokémon. Wait until next time!”
Lunar: “This next time might be far in the future, depending on if I can defeat Erika today or not.”
Lunar: “We have that in common.”
Lori: “I have a blind date coming up. I have to learn to be polite, especially if I have to battle.”
Lunar: “I think the important thing is to neither belittle him should you win, nor be overly angry should you lose. Your reaction after our battle should be fine, so I think you already learned that. Either way, good luck!”
Erika: “It’s so pleasant…”
Lunar: “Yeah, it is. Do you happen to be the Leader of this Gym?”
Erika: “Huh? …Oh, dear… I must have dozed off. Welcome. My name is Erika. I am the Leader of Celadon Gym. I am a student of the art of flower arranging. My Pokémon are solely of the Grass type.”
Lunar: “So you decorated most of this Gym? You did a good job, it looks very nice.”
Erika: “Thanks! So why did you come here? Did you want to talk with me?”
Lunar: “Well, talking is also nice, but I came to challenge you.”
Erika: “…Oh, I’m sorry, I had no idea that you wished to challenge me. Very well, but I shall not lose.”
Lunar: “Oh, also, I wanted to challenge myself and my bond to my Pokémon as well, so I only gave them instructions outside and I trusted them to follow these instructions for the whole Gym without me repeating them. If you ask the other Trainers here, they’ll confirm that I didn’t tell them which attacks to use.”
Lisa: “He’s right.”
Lori: “Yeah, it was weird.”
Mary: “It was also kind of cool, though.”
Erika: “Oh, a special challenge! Very well, we’ll see if the bond between you and your Pokémon is strong enough, or if your Pokémon will just sit around helplessly. I also have specific strategies I usually use, so I should be able to follow up on that challenge.”
Erika: “However, allow me to use items if I feel the need.”
Lunar: “That’s fine with me.”
Erika: “I’m curious, why did you not tell your Flareon to use Fire type moves, assuming everything went as you planned?”
Lunar: “It might have ruined some of your flower arrangements, don’t you agree? So I restricted myself to not use Fire type moves.”
Erika: “I thank you for considering that, but I feel like you are mocking me by handycapping yourself like that.”
Lunar: “Ah, that is a side effect I didn’t consider. I’m sorry, then. I should still be able to win, though.”
Erika: “So how about a cup of tea after this battle?”
Lunar: “Sounds nice. I hear it’s very refreshing.”
Lunar: “It definitely seems like you also have a strong bond to your Pokémon.”
Erika: “Yes, we are fighting together for a very long time now, it’s something that just comes naturally. Some of the decorations you see in this Gym are actually even more beautyful than they were when I designed them in my head. When I described them to my Pokémon, they saw my vision and perfected it.”
Erika: “You are remarkably strong. I must confer on you the Rainbowbadge. The Rainbowbadge will make Pokémon up to Lv. 50 obey. It also allows Pokémon to use Strength in and out of battle. Please also take this with you.”
Erika: “TM19 contains Giga Drain. Half the damage it inflicts is drained to heal your Pokémon. Wouldn’t you agree that it’s a wonderful move?”
Lunar: “Yes, sounds useful.”
Erika: “So how about that tea now?”
Lunar: “Gladly. Say, how long are you now the Leader of this Gym?”
Erika: “Somewhere around a year. It is very fun! There are a lot of girls here that like flowers, so I always can chat with them. Then there are also visiters that just come to admire the flower arrangements we make, so not every visitor even wants to challenge me. That’s also why I didn’t know from the beginning that you were a challenger. And you are traveling Kanto to become the next champ?”
Lunar: “Yes. I also got a request from my friend’s grandpa to catalog all Pokémon I come across, so I try to catch a Pokémon each route, more or less. I have already found many new friends this way, although it also makes it hard to choose six of them for each Gym I come across. I’d like to take all of them, but that’s against the rules and would be unfair.”
Erika: “You are cataloging Pokémon? I must say I’m impressed. I would never collect Pokémon if they were unattractive. Well, it was nice chatting with you. Good luck on your further journey!”
Lunar: “Thanks!”
Now that I have a Sylph Scope, I should be able to discern the nature of those ghosts in here.
