I Wanna Be The Very Best - Let's Play Pokémon Fire Red

Part 16: Shopping Spree

Lunar: “Flash is no longer needed for now, so time to rest, Kanon.”

Lunar: “Your name from now on is Rex. Welcome to the team!”

Training:

Now that that’s over with, back to the Underground Tunnel.

Woman: “Do you go there very often?”
Lunar: “Considering that this is my first time visiting Celadon City, no. But I’ll check it out, then.”

Lunar: “So I can’t go any further than Celadon, then. I bet it’s another Snorlax.”

Celadon City Theme

Wow, Team Rocket seems to be pretty confident in this city.

Girl: “It’s an uphill ride on Cycling Road, so I’m exhausted.”
Lunar: “So taking that road to get to Fuchsia would be quite an easy ride.”

Lunar: “Go to Vermilion and listen to the Chairman of the Pokémon Fan Club, he likes to give Bike Vouchers to people that listen to him. Or win in a lottery.”

Old Man: “It does so with a sound that only they can hear.”
Lunar: “I actually didn’t know that.”

Wow, I’ve never been in such a big city.

Man: “It evolved from a Poliwhirl when I used a Water Stone.”
Lunar: “I’ll try to remember that fact.”

X Accuracy boosts the accuracy of techniques. Dire Hit jacks up the likelihood of critical hits. Get your items at the Celadon Dept. Store!

Boy: “This nice old lady in the Mansion gave me some Tea. But it was boiling hot! Gotta cool it to drink it.”
Lunar: “Hope you feel better soon, then. But tea sure sounds nice. Especially because I remember some people that complained about a parched throat.”

Old Lady: “Try this instead.”

Old Lady: “Nothing beats thirst like some hot Tea.” It really is the best."
Lunar: “Thank you very much.”

On the next floor:

And the third floor:

Scenario Writer: “I like Misty a lot, too! Oh, and Sabrina, I like her!”
Lunar: “What are you talking about?”

Lunar: “Seriously, you’re weirding me out!”

Lunar: “At least you seem to be normal…”
Programmer: “No, I mean it! For example, I programmed that a textbox appears when you talk to me!”
Lunar: “What textbox! I don’t get you guys! You’re all crazy!”

Game Designer: “Filling up your Pokédex is tough, but don’t quit! When you finish, come tell me!”
Lunar: “If you stop talking crazy, sure…”

And the ceiling. Seems like there’s another entrance here, but I can’t reach it from here. Maybe this building has a back entrance?

Woman: “That’s why the new Game Corner is bad for our city’s image.”
Lunar: “So why did you let it be build?”
Woman: “The person who gave the order apparently has a ton of money, so we couldn’t do much about it.”

Girl: “It’s usually nice, but it breathes poison when it’s angry.”

From what I’ve heard so far, this rainbow got a touch of black with that Game Corner.

Gamer: “I knew I should have cashed in my Coins for prizes!”
So that’s where all those Gamblers, oh sorry, Gamers are coming from.

And that explains why Rockets are just leisurely strolling through this city. And I learned that they seem to have someone with a lot of money in their ranks. I wouldn’t be surprised if they bribed the officials.

Guard Spec. protects Pokémon from status-reduction moves during battle. Get your items at the Celadon Dept. Store!

Silph Co. Employee: “Someone stole our Silph Scope. The thief came running this way, I’m sure of it. But I lost sight of him! Where’d he go?”
Lunar: “I’ll also look for him. I already have an idea where he might be.”

Lunar: “Oh I’m just passing by, don’t mind me.”

Man: “No more slots for me! I’m going straight! Here! I won’t be needing this anymore!”

Lunar: “Thanks, I guess.”

Lunar: “And that’s why you shouldn’t gamble.”

Lunar: “Is that a different store than the Celadon Department Store?”
Woman: “Oh no, it’s just one floor of the Dept. Store.”

Cook: “Sorry, but we’re taking a break right now.”
Lunar: “Okay, I might visit later, then.”

Grunt: “We just shipped two thousand more Pokémon as slot prizes again today!”
Seems like he was on the phone. But that already proves that the Game Corner is a terrible place.

Grunt: “There’s no secret switch behind it!”
Lunar: “Got it!” My suspicion of the thief being in the Game Corner just got a lot stronger. I’ll check that poster then.

Old Man: “The slots just reel in the dough, big-time!”
Sadly I can’t really stop those Rockets of earning money with that. I can’t stop people from doing stupid things, after all.

Girl: “Celadon is such a pretty city!”

Receptionist: “We’re full up, unfortunately.”

Lunar: “Maybe she wants you two to get along? If she plans to get serious, you’d be meeting him a lot more often after all.”
Boy: “You’re right! Thanks, that gave me some courage!”

Looks like I’ll need Maddie to get through here.

Lunar: “Maddie, come with me for a sec.”

The Nature-Loving Princess!
Another Gym only accessible with Cut.

Oh these types of guys are the worst.

Not now, though, there’s a thief I need to catch.

Also might as well check that Department Store that’s advertised so much.

Receptionist: “The board on the right describes the store layout.”

2F: Trainer’s Market
3F: TV Game Shop
4F: Wise Man Gifts
5F: Drugstore
Rooftop Square: Vending Machines

2F: Trainer Market:

TM15 Hyper Beam
TM28 Dig
TM31 Brick Break
TM43 Secret Power
TM45 Attract

So that’s the TMs sold here.

Other than that, this is the stuff I usually see in the other Poké Marts as well.

3F: TV Game Shop:

Boy: “OT stands for ‘Original Trainer’ - the Trainer that caught it first.”

Woman: “Not done yet? How about I teach you a good move? The move I have in mind is Counter. Not like the one I’m leaning on, mind you!”
Lunar: “No, not interested. Also, what do you mean by ‘finished Pokémon’? Actually don’t answer that, otherwise my head is going to start hurting again.”
Woman: “You’re not interested? Come see me if you change your mind.”

Boy: “I love Haunter! I collect them! Huh? Haunter turned into a different Pokémon while being traded!”

Boy: “My buddy’s going to trade me his Kangaskhan for my Haunter!”

4F: Wise Man Gifts:

Boy: “I guess a Poké Doll will be it. It’s the popular thing.”

Youngster: “If a wild Pokémon appears, you can distract it with a Poké Doll. You can run away while the wild Pokémon is distracted.”

Lunar: “Oh, you also sell evolution stones? I’ll take a Fire Stone, a Thunderstone, and a Leaf Stone then.”

5F: Drugstore:

Old Man: “HP Up increases the base HP of a Pokémon. Calcium raises the base Sp. Atk stat of one Pokémon. Zinc boosts the base Sp. Def stat of one Pokémon. Carbos enhances the base Speed stat.”

Man: “Protein increases the base Attack power. Iron increases the base Defense stat.”

Lunar: “Woah, these stat enhancers are expensive!”

And that’s all the X stuff.

Rooftop Square:

Boy: “But, she’s so immature, she drives me nuts!”

Lunar: “Ah, why not! I’ll buy you a few drinks.”

Lunar: “Here, a Fresh Water.”
Girl: “Yay! Thank you! You can have this from me!”

Girl: “TM16 contains Light Screen. It’s a move that weakens the power of special attacks by your foe.”
Lunar: “Still thirsty? Then have this Soda Pop.”
Girl: “Yay! Thank you! You can have this from me!”

Girl: “TM20 contains Safeguard. It’s a move that prevents status problems among your Pokémon.”
Lunar: “You still haven’t got enough, right? Then here, a Lemonade.”
Girl: “Yay! Thank you! You can have this from me!”

Girl: “TM33 contains Reflect. It’s a move that weakens the power of physical attacks by your foe. All three of these are useful for defensive strategies!”
Lunar: “You sure know a lot. Well, good luck on your future journeys as a Pokémon Trainer!”
Girl: “Thanks!”

Found this in a back alley.

Same back alley also has access to that back entrance of the Mansion.

Man: “I know about the world of Pokémon in your Game Boy Advance! Get together with your friends and enjoy trading Pokémon!”
Lunar: “The world of Pokémon in my what now? Seriously, this building houses only crazy people, with exception of the old lady maybe.”

There are fifty TMs in all. There are also seven HMs that can be used repeatedly. Silph Co.
Good to know.

Oh, and that was an Eevee. I’ll think up a name for you later.

Now this is the only building left. Team Rocket, brace yourself!

Voting Time
I thought Eevee was one of those gift Pokémon which can’t be taken if you have a full team. Guess I remembered wrong. Otherwise I would have gotten it at the start of the next part. Anyway, today’s question is which Eeveelution should I go for? If you want to see how they look again, you can check in “Part 9: The Pokémaniac”, as Bill had those stored as his favorite Pokémon. You might want to choose the nickname depending on the Eeveelution as well.

Which Eeveelution?

  • Jolteon
  • Vaporeon
  • Flareon

And of course:

Who leaves for Eevee?

  • Pepe (Graveler)
  • Spoon Girl (Kadabra)
  • snake (Arbok)
  • ballsy (Voltorb)
  • Onyx (Onix)

Rex gets to stay by default because he didn’t get any real action yet.

Also, those of you that know the game might remember that you can indeed get some Pokémon as a prize against Coins won in the Game Corner. However, I want to omit that, as for one I find it morally questionable and it’s hard to see Lunar doing that in the way I presented him (i. e. right now I can only see it as an o.o.c. moment). and second I really don’t feel like gambling my way to get the amounts needed for those prizes.

Anyway, see you all next week~
