General Western Animation Discussion

One of the classic Disney animators did a video about VR.

Iirc he was really religious, so drugs were a no no. He had a diary, and it was always coherent.
I remember hearing that it was originally a tale he’d tell to a friend’s daughter. He’d make it up as he went along, and reference the environment he was in.

You could say that about most children’s cartoons though.

Is that the kind of information you hear from other people or the kind you go out of your way to find out?

I looked him up back when I was a big Disney fan. There was a popular myth at the time that the dude would go to a meeting with a bunch of other writers, where they’d all take drugs and try to write the best story.

Has anyone here seen Over the garden wall? It’s a short series by cartoon networks. It takes place in a fantastic forest and follows the story of two boys who got lost and try to get home. The whole show is 10 episodes of 11 minutes, but it is one of the greatest things i ever watched. If you ever watch it, watch it once, and then re-watch it right away. You will get your mind blown by its greatness.

I just started watching Samurai Jack the other day. I am really impressed with the art direction and sound design in it. When it was airing while I was younger I kind of wrote it off as a show just trying to get in on the anime hype, but it its own thing and is a lot of fun.

Favorite Western Cartoon:

I really liked the early Pink Panther series. That means, all episodes which only had a narrator. As the Panther started to talk, it just felt like it was trying to be cool, and that has often the predictable outcome of not being cool at all.
Looney Tunes is also a series I liked and still like to this day.
Of the more sitcom-oriented shows I like both The Simpsons and Futurama, although I don’t watch them regularly. I actually don’t do that at all with western animation.

Favorite animated film:

I hold the film The last Unicorn in great respect, as it is just that different in animation style, music and story compared to other works.
I also like Tim Burtons stop motion works, namely Nightmare before Christmas and Corpse Bride. I like the latter more, actually.

Currently watching:

Nothing really, I just haven’t encountered something that just grabbed my attention enough, although I also don’t really inform myself about the topic.

What’s your favorite western animation/cartoon show?
Well, uh… I didn’t watch a cartoon for so very, very long…
Not that much of a fan of wester animation, to be honest, it’s either divided in childish and for adults, the first one is not very good and very idiotized, treating kids in a way that even them can feel insulted, and those educational shows seem to have got quite popular, uh?

Adult ones… heh… The Simpsons are good, but most have really cheap humour and unneeded violence… not really the best.

Umh… so… when I was a kid I loved a lot The Rugrats, and I was really fascinated by The Thornberrys, Nickelodeon was great… before Spongebob, I never liked it, not even when I was still a kid…

What’s your favorite genre in western animation?
Umh… I guess I’ll pass, I don’t know what to say here

Who’s your favorite western animation/cartoon character?
Ugh… I didn’t give too much thought to this, to be honest, it’s been quite long since I watched one, my boyfriend is crazy over Steven Universe and made me watch a bit, but I got kinda bored and didn’t feel too interested by them…

What’s your favorite western animated film?
Well, Disney’s movies were quite good, though I didn’t check many of them lately
I only went back to check Frozen because how much of a boom it was, and it was a huge letdown (nowhere close to what it was to be expected, they take a great story with an interesting neutral character, and we just get a stupid protagonist who tries to marry someone she knew for less than 2 hours, an emo queen to be whose problems are solved by love, what she didn’t lack when they started, and THAT TERRIBLE, AWFUL SNOWMAN THAT WAS JUST ANNOYING AND RUINED EVERYTHING EVEN FURTHER) ahem… I’m derailing myself here, I’m sorry.

I would say my favorite one was Mulan.

What western animation show/cartoon are you watching right now?
…none, not because I look down on western animation, I just… can’t find a right now for now, I guess I just didn’t look enough into it, I don’t know what shows would fit my tastes, or if I’m just stuck at older shows because a nostalgia filter

** Gravity Falls**

One of the only Disney Shows that actually have PLOT that isn’t milked out to the fullest extent. Of course there are a lot of irrelevant episodes that are just for fun, but I’d consider those episodes quite useful to understanding the town.

I don’t know about that show, but do you mean that Disney rediscovered what a plot is for their shows? I’m surprised (because the latest ones I watched were mediocre at best)

Its technically a Disney Channel show, instead of just plain-Disney, but its actually quite good. Yes the characters are stereotypical and its pretty much Western SoL, but the plot afterwards is quite interesting. It goes into terrifying things that most people don’t like talking about. Not kid-friendly for a Disney show.

Has anyone here seen Song of the sea? It has some of the most gorgeous art I’ve ever seen in animation, and also a Key tier emotional ending

I heard that it was nominated for an Oscar (along with Ghibli’s movie “Princess Kaguya”) but lost to Big Hero 6. Kinda depressing that a fan-favorite beats emotional and beautiful stories.

That was all the same year? Wow, yeah that does suck. Princess Kaguya is possibly my favourite film of all time.

I have been wanting to discuss this topic for some time, and I’m glad I’ll get a chance to post my thoughts on this.

There’s been so many cartoons I seen for the past 30 years of life and to choose one that I like the most is kind of difficult for me. If I had to choose, it would be Sonic SATAM during the 90s’ that influenced my life because the show back then was one of my highlights that made me such an awesome story that defined the origins of Sonic and the Freedom Fighter as try to defend Mobotropolis from the evil Dr. Robotnik. Jaleel White was the CV for Sonic and he made it very cool looking and awesome at the same time. I think that’s how I came to watch cartoons in the past and loved stories like these that had plot, drama, action, and humor that I was able to enjoy as a kid back then.

I’m not sure if I have a favorite genre but I really do like science fiction with futuristic settings, advanced technology, and of course, robots and androids as well. One example I can think of was My Life as a Teenage Robot on Nickelodeon. She was originally called XJ-9 but her name was Jenny which to my surprise back then I liked robots and she was kind of a crush I had in that cartoon. It sounds weird coming from me there but that’s how I felt.

Hands down, it would be Sonic the Hedgehog, because he is such a cool character to me and as I mentioned above with the show I liked, part of my username is influenced from him that made me enjoy the way he acts cool and does things his own way without regrets. But, most of the time he can act irrationally at times and doesn’t think things through and that’s when he needs help from his friends so he doesn’t just rely on himself but with that power of friendship it comes a long way as he tries his best to do what he can to keep going.

My favorite western animated film would be WALL-E. I can’t say that much about it because it was such a cute film to me personally as WALL-E and EVE were meant for each other even though they’re robots and I loved how they try to interact with each other almost like how we as humans try to get to know someone from their likes and dislikes, personality, thoughts and feelings.

There are many shows I watching currently so far, so I’ll mention just a few. Steven Universe seems to be the one I’m watching the most, and Star vs. The Forces of Evil. These shows I like due to the stories as well as there is much drama in both of these that I can’t get enough of and I always want to watch more of them. Specifically, I have never seen a cartoon like Steven Universe that caught my attention of the emotional drama that has sometimes got me thinking of how they created such a significant series like that made me interested of what his character goes through and the experiences that most cartoons would dare to delve into nowadays.

That was kind of lengthy but to me cartoons have changed dramatically over the years that I’ve known and it has been a ride so far that I’ve enjoyed as a favorite pastime of mine.

Hmm let’s see here

  1. My favorite cartoon of all time…probably has to go to Avatar: The Last Airbender. I thought the show was really well animated, with a wonderful story and one of my favorite casts of characters ever. I thought it was impressive just how well they were able to balance things, having moments that would make me laugh out loud repeatedly thanks to some of the best comedy reliefs I’ve seen with a character like Sokka, or moments that would move me to tears (pretty much anything to do with Iroh). It was a rollercoaster of an experience and it’s a show I’ll gladly revisit every few years or so.

  2. My favorite genre in western animation…hmm, I think I would probably have to go with superhero fiction. Right behind The Last Airbender, a lot of my favorite western animated shows fall in this category, which makes sense since I grew up being a big comic book fan. Shows like Batman TAS, Justice League/Justice League Unlimited, Spectacular Spiderman, Young Justice, and more were all a blast to watch. Batman TAS really raised the bar to me on what you can do with cartoons period, not just being a big stepping stone for the superhero fiction genre alone.

  3. Oh this one is easy, my favorite has to go to Zuko from The Last Airbender. For one, I just love his character design and how it changes across all three seasons. Plus he’s voiced by Dante Basco who just sells the character so well with such a cool and unique voice. But overall I just love his character arcs throughout the show. To me he was the best written and developed character in it. He felt believable in his actions, his regrets, his inner turmoils, and seeing him grow into such a person he ends up by the finale was nothing short of what easily became one of my favorite characters period.

  4. Another easy one actually! I’m a big Disney nut and my favorite Disney film still to this day, and favorite animated film period, is Beauty and the Beast. For a lot of people Lion King, Aladdin, or Little Mermaid are the Disney flicks that meant the most to them when they were young, but for me it was this one. The animation, the songs, the design of the Beast, a great Disney princess, and the best romance Disney has ever done imo, to me it’s hard for them to top this.

  5. Right now I’m actually not watching any (last one I was watching was Gravity Falls which ended a while ago, would highly recommend it btw) but I do wanna get started on watching Steven Universe soon enough.

Honestly, the only Western animation that really stands out are comedy cartoons. Like The Simpsons, Futurama, Family Guy, Rick and Morty and such. They don’t do all to well in other occasions (Instead of Pixar movies). They occasionally have touching moments, like that Futurama episode with the dog.

Used to watch JL when I was a kid. I don’t think I ever understood them haha A friend of mine makes me watch all these DC animations. The Dark Knight, Flashpoint, Assault on Arkham, and recently The Killing Joke. TKG was meh and I think I could have appreciated Flashpoint better if I read the comics…? I’d like to watch Justice League again some time though
