General Western Animation Discussion

We can all be honest on Frozen
Most people liked it because “Let it go” and “DYWBAS” was in there.
Others liked it because Olaf was there.

“Let It Go” is probably the sole reason that Frozen became a big hit and won awards and such. That song is the whole Frozen. I liked the song until everyone sings it in every single minute in my life. Grew tired of it.

I quite like the story (Let’s be frank here. There’s an unexpected development of a certain someone revealed to be evil and such. Disney rarely does this - Yeah in anime it’s so common so there’s no real surprise for us, but for kids especially little girls who always expect a charming prince riding white horse to be a hero, I’m sure they were sorta aghast. btw do I need to put spoiler tag here? Because it’s like a spoiler which everyone already knows about) But the story was mediocre at best. I like the concept of “love not limited to romantic one” (but hell yeah incest tags raising between Elsanna in fanworks) and Frozen sorta change the perception of “Princesses” in general. (But still Mulan is my favorite kickass princess)

I don’t like Olaf. He’s the embodiment of “Disney merchandising”. But I do love him much much better than Minions.

Hans is the reason I ever rewatch Frozen xP

I don’t like Olaf much either (talking snowmen are weird to me).

I made a parody of Let it Go called Let it Flow. Let what flow? I’ll leave that up to your imagination.

This is one of the things I was hinting at when I said it was well-designed for it’s audience. It’s a modern twist on the original formula that made Disney so popular with young girls. It’s also a drastic change to the morals Walt tried to push.
Fit it alongside Looney Tunes as an example of how moral expectations have changed over the years.

I didn’t know until this year.

I made a parody of DYWTBASM called “Do You Want To Build An Empire?” I don’t think I’ve ever felt so bad about making an insensitive joke before. Never shared it.

wheeee~ a cartoon thread!

 • What’s your favorite western animation/cartoon show?

We used to watch Looney Toons and Tom & Jerry~ I dunno if Sesame Street could be included here but we freaking adored Elmo and the gang.

There’s also those Cartoon Network shows like Powerpuff Girls, Dexter’s Lab, Ginger (??), and Hey, Arnold, Invader Zim, which I oddly find disturbing now.

 • What’s your favorite western animated film?

I remember loving The Little Mermaid before but now, I see the mistakes Disney made in presenting Ariel’s motivation and the story’s theme. Tangled was quite similar but it did a better job conveying its point.

On older Disney movies,

Treasure Planet and Atlantis were sooo underrated. Lion King was perfect. I loved the songs in Pocahontas, but the story was meh. But my most fav would be The Hunchback of Notre Dame. It went flat at some parts but it was fun watching the villain go into extremes, murdering people, burning Paris and everything. This was my kind of movie, this was my kind of music.

On PixarDisney:

I recently watched Ratatouille and cursed myself why I hadn’t seen it before. I had to stare at the celing a bit after watching it.

Wall-E was fucking gorgeous. There were times when I would pause the movie a bit and watch the chosen angles, the camera focus, and the lighting and just admire the beauty of it all.

On Dreamworks

How to Train your Dragon!!! The second one especially~

I also liked Megamind a lot. It was an interesting take on the superhero genre and plays a lot with its cliches.

Mr. Peabody and Sherman. Time travel jinxes and a super suave talking dog.

The Prince of Egypt. Best op number, just next to The Hunchback of Notre Dame. But really, all the musical numbers here were amazing.

On Laika

The Box Trolls and Paranorman were reaaalllyyy good. I never got the charm of Coraline but I did love the novel a lot.

Others

Mary and Max. One of the few shows that made me cry.

 • What western animation show/cartoon are you watching right now?

We don’t have cable so I don’t really get to watch the latest cartoons these days =/ Cartoons on our local TV are dubbed to our language so the humor gets lost most of the times. There was a time when I got really hooked with Phineas and Ferb and watched the episodes I missed on YouTube.

The dance! Surrounded by the stars!

I do feel that Wall-E is a bit lacking in the story department (although it’s still overall good compared to Cars) but what makes Wall-E great is the music and the animation.
Yes! This is what I’m talking about. It’s just simply beautiful. This scene is the thing that made me hooked into Wall-E.

I love Phineas and Ferb too! It’s one of the good cartoon in recent days. Sadly I think the quality declined in the last season and then they cancelled the show too. I do feel that they should’ve ended that in a hundred and four episodes but they kept going until it turned suck.

To quote the Nostalgia Critic “IT WILL NEVER LEAVE! IT WILL NEVER LEAVE! IT WILL NEVER LEAVE!” XD

I’m finding myself rewatching Dexter’s Lab lately and now I’m understanding some plot points that I never understood when I was a kid.

I really need to see that series. I heard it’s really good but sadly I wasn’t interested at the time when it was airing in India.

I think that’s my favorite part of the Road Runner cartoons.

Back when I was a kid, I used to watch a lot of Scooby-Doo along with Johnny Bravo, Dexter’s Lab, Powerpuff Girls etc. I really liked all of the shows I’ve seen during that point as I mentioned, I’ve been finding myself watching Dexter’s Lab every now and then during break time when I don’t want to watch anime.

As for Disney movies, I have fond memories of watching both the Aristocats and the Lion King when I was a kid. In fact, those two films were the first films I’ve ever watched period. I also really like Dumbo (the reunion with Ms Jumbo while she was imprisoned is quite the tearjerker) , Tarzan and Aladdin. As for the newer Disney movies, I haven’t seen all that many of their newer work aside from Frozen (my mom made me watch it). In terms of Pixar, I’ve seen Toy Story 1 and to an extent 2, Mosters inc, The Incredibles, Cars and Inside Out but I really want to see Ratatouille, Up and Wall-E.

I used to like Phineas and Ferb, but it got quite repetitive so I ended up bored/annoyed by it.
The opening is still great though, and I find it gets stuck in my head at random times :stuck_out_tongue:

It’s a weird one. It spends most of the film telling a story only through visuals, and then for the finale we get voice acting.

My mom started to call me the name of Dexter’s sister when we found that show, and it bugged me for years.

I had a mix tape back then that had Smashing Pumpkins, followed by the Powerpuff Girls theme. It was a very strange mixtape.

Dumbo terrified me as a child for some reason. I never watched it again. The same with Alice in Wonderland.

You HAVE to watch Ratatouille. Just go do it >_<

I got to watch Toy Story again. I could barely remember what the first movie was all about. And Monsters Inc too~

I sing it all the time~

Another movie that I used to enjoy many years back was The Land Before Time. It was about a bunch of baby dinosaurs who got separated from their parents after an earthquake. More sequels had followed and we bought every single one of them on a rental store. And Winnie the Pooh. Yeah. Pooh was nice.

Then there was The Iron Giant. I enjoy it today as much as I enjoyed it when I was a kid.

A group of us watched a cheap knockoff of The Land Before Time earlier this year. @Aspirety loved it.
The Iron Giant was one of the most underrated animated film ever. What a shame.

I don’t know whether to chalk that up to bad marketing or to Toy Story single-handedly killing the traditional animation industry only a few years prior. Either way, I agree with you.

By the way, do we have Gravity Falls fan over here? (Come on I know I can’t be the only one seriously)
Yesterday we just had a new episode and I think the series worth discussing (but not too deeply! Even the whole internet cannot hold everything GF related!)

Is that the show all the good Adventure Time staff moved to?

No, I believe the show you’re talking about is Steven Universe created by Rebecca Sugar who wrote the Marcy episodes in Adventure Time. I’ve been hearing good things about it but never got the chance to properly watch it.

Alice in Wonderland still creeps me out to this day.

I really like Gravity Falls, but I havent watched very much of it. I watched the premier and kept watching because the opening theme was so great. But as I said, havent seen much of it since then. Should probably go back and watch it all at some point if I can.

If you read the novel you’d be creeped out even more. Reading it kinda makes me think that Lewis Carroll was high or something.

Yes, yes you should. It’s already over than 3 years since the first episode, but Disney is stalling this series so much, currently there’s only 35 episodes so far (not counting the shorts). It’s one of the series I’d be glad watching it in marathon (but, actually the long wait after each episodes are worth it, because of speculation and hype and whatever). YOU REALLY SHOULD WATCH IT! BUY GOLD! BYE!

I’m in love with the series because it certainly is appealing to kids as well as adults (in fact, I believe there are more adult fans of GF than kids ones). It contains references to popular culture, it has the jokes that don’t get through kids minds, and it’s just, awesome…
