Community Spotlight: The Tangles Anime Podcast *Key Special*

Here's something that may be of interest to you guys. Our good friends at Beneath the Tangles, a blog dedicated to discussing and analysing anime and otaku culture from a christian perspective, decided to record a podcast about Key's visual novels and the controversial topic of H-scenes. I (Aspirety) was honoured to appear as a guest on the episode myself, talking about my own life, visual novels, Key, Kazamatsuri.org, and the main topic of H-scenes. I think you'll find it a good listen; they're all really great people with some very intelligent things to say. You may recognise a few of them; Japesland, one of our forum members who treated us with his Key Saxophone Collection, serves as the host of The Tangles podcast. And another of our community members, Kaze, was also present on the podcast featuring as one of Beneath the Tangles' writers. You can listen to the podcast at the link below:

And be sure to give Beneath the Tangles a visit if you are at all interested in the musings of christian anime fans!

Thanks for the spotlight, Aspirety! It was really fun having you on! I hope we can collaborate with Kazamatsuri.org more in the future!

H-scenes have never been my real problem with Key, since all their works have all-ages versions available in English. Regarding religion, I avoid some Key works like AB! and Air, because of the spiritism present in these works. As the Bible condemns spiritism, I don’t feel comfortable with these works.

interesting enough. Almost makes me want to revive the H scene topic, but then I remember that absolutely no one on this site agrees with me on the topic, so it would probably just be arguing. again…

It spiraled a little out of control towards the end when everyone basically started calling all H scenes juvenile and whatnot, but for the majority it was pretty solid, even if it may have included things I do not agree with. Also, you hardly sound like a guest there @Aspirety, are you well acquainted with them all or was that just you bringing the casual atmosphere?

Aspi is a casual after all.

Huh, I didn’t get that from what they said. Weren’t they saying that the current state of H-scenes is juvenile, but that it could improve, if developers gave H-scenes the same treatment as the rest of the VN.

This was a pretty nice listen. Here I was thinking it would be very much attuned to Christian beliefs, but surprisingly, it was more focused on the type of storytelling that Visual Novels gives, and that was a nice thing  I guess they (Sean especially) came to the same conclusion that most reasonable people give regarding H-scenes: It is a tool that can be used for so much better storytelling, and when done that way, it serves its purpose well. Otherwise, just putting it on there for the sake of having it is, while I wouldn’t call it juvenile, in pretty bad taste.

Yeah I won’t continue lest I make something worthy of ressurrecting the H-scene topic yet again

Well it was my first time speaking with any of them over voice, so yeah, I guess? XP

I wasn’t aware of any other Christian Otaku’s doing anything like this. I’m very intrigued and will definitely be following from here on~
