Sanae is a character I don’t tend to think too much about; she pretty much embodies the ideal Japanese housewife. She loves to bake bread, even though her creative side is a bit…misguided. As I saw in Nagisa’s route, she loves to teach children as well and is a generally tolerant person. Still, she’s not stupid and has a keen sense of when her husband is goofing off. Given her personality, it makes sense that Nagisa acts fairly close to how she behaves, and it seems TomoyaDango is in good hands for now.
Her ‘route’ focuses on her relationship with the children she teaches, as well as Dango’s own relationship with her. We see Dango come to terms with how Sanae has become a mother figure to him, as well as the parallel between her and her daughter. I feel the same powerful emotions seeping from the writing of this route in a similar manner as AIR, perhaps even a little more refined from said novel. We don’t really see as much of this development more than hear about it, but it somehow carries the same impact. I don’t really know how that stacks against CLANNAD’s predecessor, but I feel that Maeda probably had practice since then and was able to more properly express what he wanted to say that he couldn’t before.
It’s a bright start to After Story, and it makes me hopeful for what’s to come. Who will Dango help next in his quest to find himself? Only time will tell…
